Primary Purpose and Essential Functions
Primary Purpose:
The University of the Pacific invites qualified applicants to apply for the full-time, core faculty, eleven (11) month, non-tenure track position of for Capstone coordination for the new Doctorate in Occupational Therapy program housed and delivered on our Sacramento Campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Doctoral Capstone Coordinator is responsible for compliance with the capstone requirements of Standards Section D.1.0 and is assigned to the occupational therapy educational program as a full-time core faculty member as defined by ACOTE. This individual must be an occupational therapist who is licensed or otherwise regulated according to regulations in the state(s) or jurisdiction(s) in which the program is located. The Doctoral Capstone Coordinator must hold a doctoral degree awarded by an institution that is accredited by a USDE-recognized regional accrediting body. For degrees from institutions in countries other than the United States, ACOTE will determine an alternative and equivalent external review process.

Essential Functions:
The Doctoral Capstone Coordinator position is an integral part of the program's overall curriculum design. The Doctoral Capstone Coordinator provides the student with an in-depth exposure to one or more of the following: clinical practice skills, research skills, administration, leadership, program and policy development, advocacy, education, and theory development.

The Doctoral Capstone consists of two parts: (1). the Capstone project (2) the Capstone experience.

The Capstone project is designed to demonstrate synthesis and application of theoretical and practical knowledge gained in the program. The Capstone experience is a fourteen (14) week capstone community field experience that must be started after completion of all coursework and Level II fieldwork, and completion of preparatory activities defined in D.1.3.

The Doctoral Capstone Coordinator will:

  1. Work closely with the student and the faculty advisor and a community advisor in developing an individual plan to integrate new knowledge gained in OTD courses into their project.
  2. Implement a project that is mutually beneficial to the community setting and the advancement of the profession.
  3. This is a faculty position with teaching, scholarship, advisement, and service responsibilities in addition to the administration of clinical education (fifty percent [50%] administration/release time).
  4. Formulate a plan that is designed to be more programmatic rather than an intervention plan that will be done on Fieldwork Level II.
  5. Through the Capstone project, the student will demonstrate his/her understanding of advanced Occupational Therapy concepts and the ability to demonstrate leadership and knowledge and ethical practice at the highest level.
  6. The capstone provides the student with an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge translation as an innovative leader, scholar, and practitioner at the doctoral level.
  7. The Doctoral Experiential Internship must be completed within a setting that supports the fulfillment of the capstone project within the setting engaging in activities related to the focus of the project.
  8. The fourteen (14) week Doctoral Experiential Internship must be completed prior to graduation.
  9. Prior fieldwork or work experience may not substitute for this Doctoral Experiential Internship.


D.1.1. Doctoral Capstone Reflects Curriculum Design

  1. Ensure the fieldwork and doctoral capstone programs reflect the Biopsychosocial model and the sequence and scope of content in the curriculum design in collaboration with faculty so the experiences strengthen the ties between didactic and experiential components of the program.
  2. Develop and uphold policies and procedures related to fieldwork and doctoral capstone programs are in accordance with ACOTE standards.
  3. Communicate fieldwork and doctoral capstone policies and procedures to appropriate audiences.
  4. Establish and maintain the necessary communication (including memorandum of understanding) between the occupational therapy students, fieldwork and doctoral capstone sites, ACHE School of Occupational Therapy, and accrediting bodies.
  5. Follow all conditions outlined in the memorandum of understanding with each site/educator.
  6. Serve as a resource to fieldwork and doctoral capstone educators/mentors/sites in order to establish and maintain an experience consistent with School of Health Science mission, philosophy, and values.
  7. Assign all eligible students to doctoral capstone experiences.
  8. Provide information to students, review the Capstone Manual, and suggest doctoral capstone sites prior to beginning of the experience.
  9. Schedule and perform regular on-site and one-on-one visits.
  10. Coordinate continuing education for fieldwork educators and doctoral capstone mentors on topics related to supervision, clinical education, and occupational therapy practice.
  11. Serve as a resource to occupational therapy students to enable student success including, but not limited to orientation to purpose, policies, and procedures, advisement, assignment of students with placements, and communication during fieldwork and doctoral capstone experiences.
  12. Ensure students receive proper assessment and supervision during fieldwork and doctoral capstone experiences.
  13. Assign grades for doctoral capstone experiences in accordance with department guidelines.
  14. Conduct regular evaluations of fieldwork and doctoral capstone experiences, disseminate findings, and incorporate plan of action.
  15. Conduct teaching, advisement, scholarship, and service activities as assigned consistent with Occupational Therapy program guidelines and as appropriate for position requirements.
  16. Participate in curriculum development, assessment, and modification as part of the program's ongoing program development and evaluation program.
  17. Maintain and uphold a professional development plan consistent with ACOTE requirements.
  18. Develop Professional development plan.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • Post-professional doctoral degree awarded by an institution that is accredited by a USDE-recognized regional accrediting body.
  • Terminal degree (OTD, PhD, EdD) from an accredited university with experience in curriculum development, research and supervision of graduate projects required.


Licenses/Certifications

  • Certified by NBCOT (The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy) as an OTR (Registered Occupational Therapist) required.
  • Licensed as an Occupational Therapist in the State of California required by the California Board of Occupational Therapy (CBOT).
  • Initially certified occupational therapist and licensed or eligible for license by the California Board for Occupational Therapy.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in clinical practice and experience in supervising Fieldwork Level II students.
  • Two (2) years of clinical practice experience as an occupational therapist.
  • Documented experience in an area of teaching responsibility and knowledge of content delivery method (e.g. documentation of continuing professional development, relevant experience, faculty development plan reflecting acquisition of new content, incorporation of feedback from course evaluations).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise necessary to ensure appropriate curriculum design, content delivery, and program evaluation.
  • Working with online learning management systems to further engage the student learning process desirable.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Products, especially Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and other MS office products.
  • Knowledge of Sacramento medical community and established relationships with professional memberships.
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards such as WASC, ACOTE and other accreditation standards preferred.
  • Experience as an Academic Fieldwork Coordinator and/or Doctoral Capstone Coordinator.
  • Experience with curriculum design, content delivery, and program evaluation.
  • Projects professionalism for the University in all communication and interaction.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy of sensitive data.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize numerous and varied assignments.
  • High-energy, versatile, self-directed.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Office.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Schedule is dependent on the course and department needs.
Valid driver's license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range $117,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
