Position Summary: The Teacher provides daily care and education of the children in the drop-in child center for visitors to the courthouse. The Teacher should possess a strong understanding of child development and early childhood education practices, as well as the ability to design and deliver engaging activities' that support program objectives. The Teacher must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as they will be working closely with young children, their families, and other staff. They should be able to establish a positive and nurturing learning environment that encourages children's natural curiosity and love of learning.

Education, Training and Experience:



  • Minimum 1 year of full-time work experience in a certified preschool childcare center or comparable group childcare program.
  • College level course work related to Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field preferred, but not required.
  • Classroom management and/or supervision experience preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook). Ability to track data and create reports.
  • Experience in a customer-facing role preferred.

  • Knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in multicultural and diverse socioeconomic situations.
  • Knowledge of child development theories and best practices in early childhood education.
  • Skilled in problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills.


  • Skilled in classroom management techniques that promote a positive learning environment; able to manage classroom behavior, encourage positive social interactions, and maintain a safe and clean classroom environment.
  • Skilled in communication; able to communicate with parents, caregivers, and other staff members and be able to provide communicate any concerns or issues that arise.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to create a safe, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment that meets the individual needs of each child.
  • Ability to solve problems efficiently and make informed decisions in a fast-paced environment.



Additional Eligibility Requirements:



  • This position requires current enrollment in the Oregon State Employment Department Child Care Division Criminal History Registry.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification required or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • Current Food Handler certification or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Provide and lead the daily care and education of the children as well as initiate and foster positive guidance and behavior.
  • Create a positive learning environment that fosters creativity, exploration, and independence.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, clean, and organized classroom environment that is conducive to learning and exploration.
  • Model behavior, and provide training and feedback to establish positive morale among staff and a welcoming, calm environment for children.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate program activities that engage the interest and developmental level of the children.
  • Ensure children are supervised at all times and are involved in safe appropriate activities.
  • Various administrative tasks (i.e.: answering phones, database management, registering and enrolling new families, etc.).



Other Responsibilities:



  • Attend staff meetings and training as needed.


  • Other duties as assigned.



Supervisory Responsibility: This position is not responsible for supervising other employees.

Schedule: This is a full-time, 40-hours/week position, Monday - Friday.

Work Environment:



  • This position works in a drop-in childcare center in the Multnomah County Central Courthouse located in downtown Portland.
  • There may be a number of situations happening at once and must be prepared to handle accidents and emergencies at any time.
  • The Teacher may experience smells associated with toileting and children who are ill.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is consistently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, use keyboard and mouse, reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk and hear.
  • This position requires the ability to lift and carry children up to fifty (50) pounds and have sufficient mobility to maintain a level of supervision in all areas of the center.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
