Assistant Professor of Media and Public Affairs

The School of Media and Public Affairs at George Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin as early as August 2025. We seek scholars with a strong research profile and teaching interests in political communication with a focus on one or more of the following areas: digital platforms and technology, including AI; networked advocacy; online political discourse; misinformation, hate speech and extremism; computational methods for the study of political discourse or behavior; and/or the role of the news media in the new information ecology. The successful candidate will be aligned with GW's Institute for Data, Democracy and Politics ( IDDP), whose mission is to help society understand critical challenges that arise at the intersection of digital technology, media, and democracy, in turn informing sound policy solutions through rigorous, evidence-based research that advances democratic values.

Responsibilities include teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level, including courses in political communication, social media platforms, and introductory data analysis; conducting a successful program of research; advising students; and performing department and university service. This position is pending final budgetary approval.

Applicants must have a PhD in a field related to media and public affairs such as political science, communication, sociology, computational social science, or a closely related field. The candidate must have or demonstrate potential for a high profile and outstanding reputation in the field as demonstrated by publication record, professional recognition and/or leadership positions, and demonstrate excellence in teaching media and public affairs.

An internationally recognized center for research and teaching in political and international communication and journalism, The George Washington University's School of Media and Public Affairs is a dynamic, interdisciplinary program based in the heart of Washington, D.C., where media, public affairs and politics intersect.
