About the Department
The NC State Office of General Counsel provides, manages and coordinates all legal services for the university in a collegial, responsive and professional manner. The office provides legal and risk management advice on a wide variety of matters to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, senior officers, other university administrators, and faculty and staff who are acting on behalf of the university. These matters include, but are not limited to, employment, student affairs, athletics, public records, real property, sponsored programs, intellectual property, purchasing and civil rights. The office represents the university in administrative proceedings before federal and state agencies and coordinates all litigation matters.
Essential Job Duties
Job Duties for the Assistant General Counsel
The Assistant General Counsel will provide legal services on behalf of the university to all its constituencies, with a focus on litigation-related functions. Key responsibilities include:


  1. Litigation Management
    • Handle all aspects of litigation, including:

      • Responding to subpoenas and document requests
      • Conducting legal research
      • Writing and reviewing pleadings, tort claims, e-discovery, and complex litigation matters





  2. Claims and Dispute Resolution

    • Manage claims before federal and state administrative agencies
    • Provide advice on internal dispute and grievance processes



  3. Collaboration and Strategy
    • Interact with the Attorney General's Office, internal counsel, and outside counsel to develop litigation strategies and approaches


  4. Support for Student Affairs, Public Records, and Employment Practices
    • Provide legal support in areas such as:

      • Minors on campus policies

      • FERPA requests and advice
      • Written student complaints
      • HR policy development
      • Internship and academic affiliations
      • Workers' compensation




  5. Legal Counsel Across University Operations
    • Offer advice and guidance in various higher education legal issues, including:

      • Contracts
      • Athletics
      • Compliance and risk management
      • Intellectual property and research
      • Other areas as needed




  6. Professional Growth Opportunity
    • Contribute to the development of an in-house legal practice within a mission-driven organization

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires a relevant post-Baccalaureate degree with a minimum of three (3) years or greater of related professional experience, or a relevant undergraduate degree and a minimum of five (5) years or greater of relevant experience may be substituted for the advanced degree.
  • Specific litigation experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving abilities, a keen understanding of the client's operating environment, and project management skills.
  • Initiative and intellectual curiosity.
  • Excellent research, writing, drafting, and client counseling skills.
  • Ability to juggle shifting priorities and multiple, demanding projects.
  • Detail-oriented with organizational proficiency and excellent follow through.
  • Demonstrated effective team member.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with student-related or other higher education matters.
  • Experience practicing in NC state and federal courts.

Required License(s) or Certification(s)
Must be licensed to practice law in the State of North Carolina (or eligibility for admission within 12 months of hire).
Valid NC Driver's License required No
Commercial Driver's License required No
