Counselor/Therapist - School of Law and University Counseling Center

JOB SUMMARY

As a member of the University Counseling Center (UCC) team, the Counselor/Therapist is responsible for the assessment and delivery of mental health services on an outpatient basis to students with varying emotional and psychological concerns. The Counselor/Therapist will split their full-time work hours between the University Counseling Center, the School of Law and other critical-need areas on campus as needed. The Counselor/Therapist will conduct initial consultations with students in order to determine a plan for future counseling services, referrals to alternative campus and/or community resources. Additional counseling services include prevention services, crisis intervention and outreach support to faculty, staff and student organizations.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees phone, in-person and/or virtual triage and initial wellness consultation appointments for the UCC and manage interactions with clients to ensure appropriate level of support is provided in an efficient manner

  • Provides in-person and/or virtual psychotherapy/counseling services for students as individuals, couples and/or in groups

  • Travels between SLU campuses to provide counseling services and serve as a clinical counseling liaison between the UCC and other campus departments as needed

  • Offers crisis intervention services to students with clinical emergencies

  • Utilizes nationally and internationally recognized diagnostic systems to diagnose student and develop and implement treatment plans consistent with clinical diagnosis

  • Maintains compliance with mandatory local, state, and federal reporting laws and professional and ethical standards and guidelines

  • Refers students to off-campus clinical services for specialized treatment and/or long-term therapy as appropriate

  • Provides outreach and education about UCC service offerings to staff, faculty, and student organizations

  • Maintains a knowledge of federal, state, and local mental health system and well-being resources

  • Keeps timely, accurate, and ethical records consistent with UCC policy

  • Participates in student well-being committees and UCC initiatives

  • Attends weekly Counseling Center meetings

  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Ability to identify emotional, behavioral and psychosocial needs and strengths and to formulate treatment plans

  • Willingness to identify and implement creative and innovative clinical interventions consistent with current best practices and treatment plan goals and objectives

  • Ability to work with diverse student population, including knowledge of related cultural influences that may affect health

  • Interpersonal human relations skills including ability to maintain and convey a positive attitude

  • Training in trauma-informed care and psychotherapy approaches to trauma.

  • Experience with, and sensitivity to, diverse populations and the ability to build inclusive and equitable communities where differences are appreciated and engaged.

  • Openness to feedback and a commitment to personal and professional growth.

  • Effective conflict management skills

  • Understanding of academic cultures, rules, and regulations

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in Licensed Clinical Social Work (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counseling (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Psychologist withtraining and experience with intake interviewing/assessment/consultation, crisis intervention case management

  • Three years of related work experience

  • Certification/Licensure - State of Missouri or eligibility for MO licensure, as documented by out-of-state licensure

  • Experience with, and sensitivity to, diverse populations and the ability to build inclusive and equitable communities where differences are appreciated and engaged

  • Training in trauma-informed care and psychotherapy approaches to trauma
