Carnegie Mellon, one of the world leaders in higher education and research, is seeking a Workplace Safety Specialist to join Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S).

We are looking for a dedicated professional to support the Workplace Safety Program within Environmental Health and Safety's day-to-day operations.

You will be responsible for supporting and collaborating with the Assistant Director of EH&S in the development, deployment, quality assurance, and training of Workplace Safety Programs that comply with federal, state, and local regulatory obligations and university procedures. You will achieve these goals through collaboration with all EH&S staff in the efficient and integrated delivery of services.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Program Development: Support the development, implementation and/or updating of programs related to workplace safety, including but not limited to fall protection, mobile equipment, confined space, and electrical safety.

  • Training: Provide training and assistance to the university community in ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory obligations as it relates to Workplace Safety programs.

  • Quality Assurance: Conduct periodic assessments of Workplace Safety programs with the university community to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory obligations.

  • Equipment Safety: Collaborate with academic and student groups in the safe operation and handling of equipment located in shop and maker spaces.

  • Incident Management: Participate in the investigation and reporting of workplace related injuries and identify opportunities for process and program improvement.

  • Project and Contractor Management: Function as the primary EHS/Workplace safety contact on construction and renovation projects. Participate in project planning and construction meetings.

  • Contractor Safety: Collaborate with the Assistant Director of EHS and the university community to identify an appropriate level of contractor safety interfacing and oversight. Once a process is identified, work to properly document, communicate, train and implement the process with all EH&S partners.

  • EH&S Cross functional support: Support other team members, requests of service, projects, and functions as required.

We are seeking someone who is passionate about safety and who takes a collaborative and team-oriented approach to helping customers understand safety needs and regulations. You should possess outstanding organizational and communication skills to make a positive impact on our programs and the university. You should demonstrate the ability to solve problems, influence others, and show dedication to campus safety through improvement of EH&S programs.

You should demonstrate:

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects

  • Positive and customer-focused attitude with a good sense of teamwork and problem-solving

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to potentially be on call and work irregular or extended work hours to including, but not limited to, overtime, emergency hours, nights and weekends.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety, or related field.

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience with workplace safety, construction safety or related activities.

  • Associate Safety Professional certification preferred

  • Successful background check

  • Child protection clearances (ACT 153)
