The Department of Student Success and Instruction in Libraries at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Instructional Designer.

About the Opportunity

Lead, coordinate, and actively participate in instructional design projects for the West Virginia University Libraries' Student Success and Instruction department and West Virginia University Libraries. Provide technology and instructional design support to the Student Support and Instruction as well as to other West Virginia University Libraries' constituents.

What You'll Do

Instructional Design

In collaboration with the Head of Student Success and Instruction:



  • Lead and coordinate multiple instructional design projects from inception to completion, ensuring deadlines, deliverables, and quality standards are met.
  • Develop project timelines, assign tasks, and monitor progress to keep stakeholders informed and aligned.
  • Plans, designs, develops, implements, and evaluates curricular/ course content, instructional materials, and learning objects for West Virginia University Library (WVUL) as well as for WVUL constituents, such as Research Support & Engagement and the West Virginia & Regional History Center.
  • Collaborates with WVUL Student Success and Instruction librarians, and other WVUL constituents, on developing, designing, implementing, and evaluating instructional and assessment projects.
  • Advises WVU librarians on evidenced-based instructional design and practice.
  • Assists the Department Head with the design, development, and implementation of assessment instruments.
  • Collects data from assessments and other data streams; prepares reports with recommendations for Department Head and WVUL constituents.
  • Teaches at least one section of ULIB 101 each academic year.
  • Maintains and supports WVUL courses and instructional resources on the University CMS (Blackboard) as well as on any proprietary LMS platforms (LibGuides). Such tasks include, but are not limited to, migrating and uploading courses and instructional materials in a timely fashion, setting and updating due dates, arranging test release times, and updating instructor information.
  • Contacts other WVU campus offices, such as ITS, for technical assistance as needed.
  • In collaboration with Student Success and Instruction Librarians, and other instructors, maintains and supports WVUL courses and instructional resources on the University CMS (Blackboard).
  • Tests and evaluate educational technologies to meet student instructional needs and accessibility guidelines.
  • Provides technical assistance to ULIB instructors.
  • Serves as the eCampus Point of Contact for WVU Libraries including advocating for representation of WVU Libraries representation throughout eCampus.
  • Serves as SLI Coordinator for WVUL


Service & Professional Developing and Training



  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as well as professional development opportunities.
  • Interprets and applies Library policies as appropriate.
  • May assist with other duties as requested by the Head of WVUL Student Success and Instruction.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree, with courses in education or instructional design
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in each of the following:


    • Computer workstations, peripherals, software applications
    • Educational technology software and platforms
    • Designing instructional materials and teaching in a higher education environment


  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities



  • Excellent organizational skills with aptitude for complex detailed work.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, lead, and implement projects.
  • Experience with HTML or web-authoring software
  • Understanding of instructional design principles and methods and their implementation into instructional practice.
  • Understanding of information literacy frameworks and standards and their implementation into instructional practice.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent visual, oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
