MizzouRec Services and Facilities is a department within the Division of Student Affairs that provides quality leisure experiences to all members of the campus community, primarily Mizzou students. Research shows a positive correlation between physical activity and educational outcomes of university students. Recreational sports and exercise provide students with opportunities for involvement and to develop a sense of belonging on campus. MizzouRec aims to distribute these benefits equitably among all Mizzou students through its nationally recognized facilities and programs.

Job Description

Are you passionate about outdoor adventure, team-building, and empowering students? Join our team at MizzouRec as the Assistant Director of Venture Out, where you'll lead our dynamic Venture Out and Climbing Wall Programs and work with a supportive group of Student Affairs professionals to create impactful experiences for course participants and student employees. This program includes a 35.5-foot climbing wall, bouldering wall, low and high ropes course, Alpine Tower, and a variety of team-building activities that encourage leadership, collaboration, and personal growth.

As the Assistant Director, you will collaborate closely with other MizzouRec and Student Affairs professionals, making a positive impact in the lives of our students, campus partners, and community groups.

  • Using your background and experience with experiential education and climbing plan, administer, supervise, and manage daily operations and budgets for the Venture Out program, including coordinating activities for both the Venture Out challenge course and climbing wall operations. This also incorporates the development and execution of events such as at least 3 Venture Out courses per week and 20 climbing wall events annually outside the normal climbing and bouldering activities that occur within MizzouRec facilities.
  • Develop and execute revenue strategies that meet revenue targets through sales to sustain a self-funding program.
  • Provide safe and supportive programming and mitigate risks associated with the Venture Out Programs which includes performing routine safety and maintenance inspections of the both the challenge course (Alpine Tower, Odyssey High Ropes Course, and low ropes course areas) and indoor climbing space (climbing wall and bouldering wall) in alignment with the manufacturers and nationally recognized standard-bearer's exceptions.
  • Track all risk management trainings and guidelines for Venture Out and climbing wall initiatives (meeting and exceeding the ACCT and AMGA standards).
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluation of student employees (25+ Venture Out and climbing wall student staff) that reflect the high level of professionalism, respect, and customer service expectations of Venture Out/Climbing Wall, MizzouRec, and campus. Provide on-going staff development opportunities.
  • Facilitate experiences for the Mizzou community and surrounding stakeholders (i.e. students, campus partners, public schools, non-profit entities, private schools, and corporate organizations).
  • Participate in various inter-departmental, divisional, and university initiatives. Those opportunities include but are not limited to special projects and events, programming, risk management and operational leadership teams, and work groups pertaining to the overall student experience.
  • As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities is expected in order to serve students and maintain the MizzouRec, Student Affairs, and Campus mission
Shift

40 hours a week.
Monday - Friday; 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Evenings and weekends will be required based on program needs.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in a related area and five years of an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is preferred. Certification from an appropriate association such as American Mountain Guides Association's (AMGA) Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) certification and the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) Level II certification.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $51,875 - $65,000
GGS Grade: 010
