About the Job

The Student Engagement Coordinator (SEC) will be part of a new team to develop the operations, services and programs of the new First-Gen Student Success Center. This position oversees and executes student-focused events and programming, supervises and mentors student employees/interns, and leads the daily services of the center.

The First Gen Student Success Center is part of the Student Success team within the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE), a unit within the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. The SEC reports to Deon Newsom, Director of First-Gen Student Success Initiatives.

  • Appointment: 100% time, 12-month Civil Service position
  • Job Classification: Student Services Professional 2 - Student Engagement & Development (8462ED)
  • Salary Range: $46,500 - $50,000
  • Work Environment: This position is expected to work on campus in the FG Center located in Appleby Hall on the East Bank. Remote workdays may be available as the position/center evolves.
  • Funding for the Center is secured for 3 years. Recurring funds beyond 3 years will be based on the center's demonstrated success.

Position Responsibilities

Program Management and Student Interns Supervision (60%)

  • Provide planning and support services to first-gen students by leading high-quality customer service, program development, and student-centered services for the First-Gen Student Success Center.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a team of student interns in completing various projects and tasks for the department (e.g., outreach, communications, programming and student lounge management).
  • Establish and facilitate daily operational procedures including technology, space, purchasing, workflow, and office manuals to ensure seamless service delivery and perform problem-solving for student concerns and office issues.
  • Ensure that UMN and OUE policies/procedures and practices are upheld.
  • Meet with the Director to address operational efficiency and provide updates regarding the work of the student interns.

Student Engagement and Programming (35%)

  • Develop and execute campus-wide signature programming and student events to foster community and promote student success including initial planning, marketing, logistics and assessment.
  • Coordinate outreach events for the First-Gen Student Success Center including orientation, admissions, and other events.
  • Develop and oversee communications to first-gen students including social media, newsletters, family communications, and Center promotions.
  • Gather, compare, and analyze data for events, programs, and services to determine overall effectiveness and make recommendations for future offerings, including annual reporting.

Professional Development, Service, and Other Duties (5%)

  • Engage in professional development and service activities related to the student services profession, within the University of Minnesota community and beyond, when appropriate.
  • Participate in and represent the First-Gen Student Success Center on committees as assigned by the Director.
  • Perform various other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree plus two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience to total six years.
  • At least one year of experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Experience with project management and program implementation.
  • Experience which demonstrates effective relationship-building and team-building.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse and respectful workplace that welcomes and respects a diverse constituency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing and executing services as well as programs that provide support for college students, specifically first-generation students.
  • Working knowledge of student development theory.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable, and collaborative.
  • Ability to work both independently and interdependently as part of a team.
  • Experience with complex databases, preferably student data systems similar to PeopleSoft and APLUS.
About the Department

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $46,500 - $50,000 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
