Job Summary

This position processes all classifications of undergraduate and graduate applications for international students that are submitted to the University. There is much public contact with prospective students and their families through e-mail, phone, and walk-in appointments. With training, the incumbent must be knowledgeable of all admissions policies and procedures and be able to apply them. Working in a production unit, the incumbent should be able to work with speed and accuracy.

This position will evaluate credentials and determine if international students are admissible to the University in a variety of programs: undergraduate and graduate degree programs, Undergraduate and Graduate Pathway Programs; English language programs and special short-term programs. As a Designated School Official, this position will stay informed on general immigration matters, process official immigration documents for incoming international students, advise on visa matters, and update student records in various databases.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$16.61 - $21.59 per hour


Required Qualifications

  1. High school graduation or equivalent
  2. Any one or combination totaling two years (24 months) from the categories below:
    (a) course work in any discipline as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
    - 30 semester hours equals one year (12 months)
    - 60 semester hours or an Associate's Degree equals eighteen months (18 months)
    - 90 semester hours equals two years (24 months)
    (b) work experience in administrative support, admissions and enrollment, customer service, public relations, records management, or closely related experience
  3. In order to meet the Department of Homeland Security requirements for DSO, the applicant must be able to prove they are either a citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States by providing one of the following documents:
    - Copy of U.S. passport (current or expired)
    - Copy of a U.S. civil-issued birth certificate
    - Copy of an alien registration card
    - Copy of a naturalization or citizenship certificate


Preferred Qualifications

  1. The following experience:
    a. data entry and familiarity with software programs (i.e., Word, Excel, etc.)
    b. Salesforce, Slate, Sale, or CRM
    c. working or living abroad
    d. working with international students
    e. serving as a DSO or ARO
  2. The following skills and abilities:
    a. strong attention to detail and excellent assessment skills
    b. thoroughness and good organization skills
    c. strong written and oral communication skills
    d. excellent customer service skills


Work Hours

8:00am-4:30pm Monday through Friday

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.

Illinois State University is authorized to do business within the State of Illinois. All work under this appointment is required to be performed from within the State of Illinois. If hired, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days from the start date for this position. Illinois residency requires proof of a valid Illinois driver's license or a valid State of Illinois ID card.
