Job Summary

The Optometrist Supervisor 1 ("Optometrist") provides consultation, evaluation, and treatment of ophthalmological problems. The Optometrist provides basic optometric examinations. This position provides eye exams for new and established patients as well as follow-up exams for established inflammatory and infectious ocular disease patients in the ophthalmology practice. Performs triage and screening for acute or unscheduled patients in ophthalmology and prescribes ophthalmic medication within the scope of practice. Is familiar with immuno-suppresive medications.

Supervises technical support staff and assistants for the optometry practice for optical dispensary and/or optometry practice. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources.

Supervises staff in medication refills, coordination of clinical research trials, prior authorization for ocular and systemic medications, and laboratory monitoring. Coordinates clinical staff meetings, assigns responsbilities and implements objectives. Supervises and teaches optometric trainees, ophthalmology fellows and residents.


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $84,400 - $180,000 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The F.I. Proctor Foundation for Research in Ophthalmology at UCSF is committed to engaging in research activities and providing state-of-art patient care that address infectious and inflammatory disease that cause blindness. The mission is the prevention of blindness worldwide through research and teaching focused on infectious and inflammatory eye disease.

Required Qualifications


  • Doctoral degree in optometry issued by an accredited school / college of optometry.
  • 1 or more years of project/management/lead role.
  • Minimum of 3 years of directly related experience.
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments within optometry. May begin specializing in specific area of optometry. Understanding of application of theory in acute care settings.
  • Knowledge of optometry services, Medical Center, HR and UC policies and processes. Knowledge of infection control, safety, administrative, and clinical practice policies and procedures.
  • Communication and leadership skills to effectively supervise staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach others and motivate staff.
  • Skills to communicate with peers, patients, and multidisciplinary team members. Customer service proficiency to ensure patient satisfaction.
  • Interpersonal and teamwork skills to collaborate with campus management, patients, staff, and faculty at all levels across campus. Actively cooperates and supports the work of others.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Skills to manage multiple priorities and delegate work functions efficiently.

License/Certification


  • Possession of a license issued by the California State Board of Optometry to practice optometry required.
