THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is seeking to hire an Engineering Technician as part of a robust 12-month training program designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the Engineering Technician role. This position offers hands-on experience in essential engineering areas such as Design, Construction, Maintenance, and Highway Safety and Traffic, equipping the chosen candidate with the skills necessary for a smooth transition into a permanent position within District 6. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, the employee will undertake a variety of foundational technical responsibilities that span the full spectrum of PennDOT's operations, including design, construction, and maintenance functions. The individual will offer engineering assistance while developing a solid grasp of departmental policies, procedures, organizational structures, and the intricacies of workflow. The training program is designed to include multiple assignments that facilitate interaction with district staff and familiarize the employee with operational protocols. Furthermore, participants will engage in classroom training sessions as specified by the program coordinator. As the training advances, your duties will expand to include the evaluation of occupancy requests to ensure they meet right-of-way standards and adhere to relevant state laws and regulations. You will also be responsible for determining the necessary requirements for restoration, bonding, and insurance. Your role will involve various construction inspection tasks associated with the issuance of highway occupancy permits, as well as monitoring ongoing work activities. Inspections of all occupancy sites will be conducted prior to the start of work, during the execution of tasks, and upon completion to confirm compliance with permit conditions and qualifications. Additionally, you will maintain detailed occupancy records and files for the County, safeguard historical roadway right-of-way plans to verify existing widths, prepare both routine and specialized reports, and undertake other related responsibilities as required.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time on an ad-hoc basis. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in King of Prussia.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • An associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or any other appropriate field of engineering technology.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
Other Requirements:
  • This particular position requires possession of a valid Class C Driver's License.
