The Town of Needham is seeking qualified individuals to fill the full-time position of Laborer 2 within the Recycling and Solid Waste Division of the Department of Public Works. More About the Division

The Recycling and Solid Waste division provides residents and local businesses with recycling and waste disposal services at the Town's transfer station, referred to as the RTS (Recycling and Transfer Station). The RTS is a residential drop-off facility with a Pay-As-You-Throw program. In addition to supporting the proper disposal of recycled materials and solid waste, the division also educates the public about what and how to recycle safely and efficiently.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond to routine inquiries, requests, and complaints from residents, contractors, etc.; provide residents with information about recycling, disposal, and RTS services.
  • Monitor activity to ensure waste is handled appropriately.
  • Assist with loading and processing of solid waste, recyclables, and other materials collected on site.
  • Perform routine laboring duties of a skilled nature, alone or as part of a crew, such as digging, raking, weeding, lifting, carrying, grass cutting, shoveling, removing brush or trash, cleaning, sweeping, light painting, repair work, or tasks of similar complexity.
  • Operate power tools, light hydraulic and motorized equipment on a beginner to intermediate skill level; assist in installing, repairing and maintaining sewer pipes, water mains, services and hydrants; read interior and exterior water meters; and clean storm sewers, catch basins and pipes. Operate a small dump truck.
  • Maintain work area and equipment in safe and operable condition, adhering to all applicable safety and health rules and regulations; maintain general cleanliness and appearance of workspace or facility.
  • Serve as part of a work crew in other divisions; provide support to all division maintenance activities; assist other Town departments as required; and endeavor to continuously improve the services provided to the taxpayers.
  • Assist in seasonal responsibilities including assembling and dismantling spectator stands and related equipment; mowing, leaf and rubbish collection; tree planting; and pool, field, and ice-skating rink maintenance.
  • Cut and remove severed tree limbs, dead branches and brush; and handle and apply concrete at a beginner skill level.
  • Mandatory participation in the Snow & Ice Program, including operating snow plowing and removal equipment.

Requirements

The following requirements may be substituted by any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job:

  • General knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and the general public.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions for frequent and extended periods, requiring the ability to lift, carry, and position heavy objects.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License.
  • Must have a Class B CDL permit upon hire.
  • Must be able to obtain a Class B CDL license within one year of hire (individuals will remain in their probationary period until they receive their Class B CDL license).
Preferred but not Required Qualifications:
  • Class 2A and 1C Hoisting Engineer's License
  • Class A or B CDL license
