Staff Engineer, Screw Compressor Engineering

Johnson Controls, Inc.
United States, Pennsylvania, New Freedom
Jan 20, 2025

The staff engineer has a strong practical background in mechanical engineering including mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, component design, manufacturing processes, assembly and fastening techniques, data collection & analysis and technical writing. This position includes both design of new screw compressors & components, and sustaining engineering activities for existing compressor families. Additional sustaining duties will include assisting product technical support, manufacturing (factory), quality, and other compressor & chiller engineering personnel in the business unit globally.

What you will do

  • Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team developing state-of-the art screw compressors, with focus on advanced design applications. Incorporate a broader system/platform view as part of the process.

  • Use standard and advanced technical principles, theories, concepts, techniques, processes, and best practices in the field and apply them to compressor design, development, and complex system-level troubleshooting.

  • Manage prototype builds, coordinate the activities of engineering design drafters and technicians in support of development and testing activities.

  • Communicate/collaborate with designers to create drawings and define bills of material. Review and approve drawings prior to release for manufacturing.

  • Apply process and project management techniques to execute projects within budget and schedule.

  • Coach/mentor and develop junior engineers.

How you will do it

  • With guidance from senior staff engineering personnel over 1-2 years, become a subject matter expert for screw compressors when communicating with customers, chiller and applications engineers, manufacturing, and field service personnel.

  • Create engineering change notices (ECN's) to effectively document and communicate technical detail when design changes are needed.

  • Participate in and/or lead formal problem-solving activities when necessary. Lead design improvement efforts for cost, performance, functionality, manufacturability, and reliability.

  • Participate in customer-related quality activities (8D) as the compressor engineering representative on the team, utilizing experience with problem solving and root cause corrective action to drive resolution.

  • Apply manufacturing experience to ensure designs are robust for manufacturing, assembly, and service.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical or related fields 10+ yrs of experience including 8+ years of professional experience with Screw compressors is required.

  • Experience and ability to manage work as the lead engineer on multiple projects simultaneously is required and strong project/program management skills are essential.

  • Demonstrated practical background indicating a strong mechanical aptitude.

  • Working knowledge and understanding of finite element analysis and CFD

  • Practical experience with rotating equipment design of screw rotors, vibration analysis, bearings and oil systems for screw compressors is strongly preferred.

  • Working knowledge of piping, flanged connections, valves, pressure & temperature instrumentation, and fluid sealing methodologies such as O-ring and gasketed joints is strongly preferred.

  • Experience with pressure vessels/pressure boundary components is preferred.

  • Strong background in manufacturing processes such as machining and assembly techniques is preferred and familiarity with iron, steel and aluminum casting processes is desirable.

  • Proven record of innovation in the field of Screw compressors.
