Job Description: ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Acts as liaison for consumers of mental health and substance abuse services to DBHDID, state hospitals, community mental health centers, consumer/recovery advocacy groups, and other constituencies. 2. Assists in planning, developing, and presenting educational curriculum and training on consumer/recovery and related issues. 3. Represents consumer/recovery perspectives in public awareness efforts, policy and legislative development, program planning and evaluations. 4. Serves as information resource for consumers and persons in recovery and other interested people related to service availability and accessibility. 5. Supervises Peer Support Specialist program and staff and volunteers. 6. Develops proposals and provides technical assistance regarding available funding and resources for consumer/recovery projects and consumer-run programs. 7. Serves on appropriate committees, councils, etc., as indicated; attends appropriate meetings, conferences, and workgroups. 8. Develops newsletters, information sheets, and journal articles; responds to requests for information from consumers and persons in recovery; produces written reports on programming. 9. Participates in National Association of Consumer/Survivor Mental Health Administrators (NAC/SMHA) and National Faces and Voices of Recovery meetings and in other appropriate national activities that affect consumers of mental health and substance abuse services. EDUCATION * Bachelor's degree in administration, business, psychology, social work, nursing or other human-service related field * Master's degree in related field EXPERIENCE * Bachelor's degree with two years' mental health and substance use treatment-related experience. * Master's degree will substitute for one year of mental health and substance use-treatment related experience. * Candidate must be self-disclosed consumer of mental health services for severe and persistent mental illness and have co-occurring substance use disorder * Knowledge of appropriate mental health and substance abuse treatment and service-delivery systems, as well as knowledge of self- help groups and ability to organize and support self-help movements. * Detailed knowledge of consumer and recovery issues and the knowledge and skills relative to consumer-run programs. * Leadership experience in working with others, preferably consumer-organized recovery activities. * Positive attitude, ability to create opportunities for growth, enable change, and nurture culture of consumer empowerment. * Ability to develop educational and training materials and to make presentations in various settings. * Must have skills in producing correspondence and final documents. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS * Position has no unusual physical demands; individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. * Position requires lifting of 10 pounds maximum with occasional lifting of ledgers, computer runs, or small tools. * Position may occasionally require walking or standing, stooping or bending. * Occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions. * May involve dealing with modestly unpleasant situations, as with occasional exposure to office chemicals and/or continual use of a video display terminal. * Extensive travel may be required.
