Job Summary

The Assistant Director for Operations and Safety is responsible for the effective coordination, oversight, and execution of operational and safety initiatives within the Division of Operations and Safety. This role ensures compliance with institutional, local, state, and federal regulations while also supporting large-scale university events, including the Academy for International Disaster Preparedness' (AIDP) Field Course. The position integrates operational safety management, event logistics, academic program support, and faculty/student engagement to enhance the Academy's effectiveness.

  • Serves as the primary liaison for coordinating logistics, risk mitigation, and safety protocols for all special events managed by the Division.
  • Supports compliance with university, state, and federal emergency management regulations, including maintaining training documentation and procedural updates.
  • Assists in the planning, coordination, and execution of high-profile university events, ensuring operational and safety protocols are in place.
  • Develop and implements structured safety and risk mitigation plans for the Field Course, treating it as a special event that requires formal logistical oversight.
  • Represents the Division at event planning meetings, contributing to logistical discussions, venue selection, staffing coordination, and emergency preparedness for large-scale university events while ensuring safety best practices are integrated.
  • Assists with inspections to ensure University compliance with safety regulations, risk mitigation measures, and overall preparedness.
  • Fosters and maintain collaborative relationships with private, local, state, and federal stakeholders to enhance partnerships, training initiatives, and reciprocal agreements that support the Division's operational and safety objectives.
  • Supports course modernization under the Sr. Director's direction by updating materials, redesigning assessments, and enhancing applied learning to meet current standards. Ensures academic integrity through AI-resistant strategies and randomized testing. Assists in course redesign to enhance assessment and achieve QM Certification by refining course structure, learning objectives, critical thinking development, and instructional delivery.
  • Develop recruitment strategies under the Sr. Directors direction to boost AIDP enrollment, strengthen agency partnerships for internships and career pathways, and enhance program visibility through outreach, partnerships, and industry collaborations.
  • Assists with emergency response efforts in the FIU Emergency Operations Center and supports university preparedness and recovery operations during hurricanes and other critical incidents.
  • Able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to support critical university events and emergency response efforts.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Sr. Director and Sr. Vice President & COS to ensure the continued success of the Division. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning additional duties that are logically related to the position.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an appropriate specialization and four (4) years of appropriate experience; OR Master's degree in an appropriate specialization and two (2) years of appropriate experience.
Desired Qualifications

  • Years of experience in both operations/logistics management and curriculum development, teaching, or academic administration.
  • Experience working in both administrative and faculty/educational roles (e.g., course instruction, program coordination, faculty development, or compliance management).
  • Knowledge of higher education accreditation standards, curriculum assessment, and operational safety policies.
