About This Role

This position provides daily leadership and management to the Purebred Beef Unit and all associated operations of the unit for the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry (ASI). The unit consists of an approximately 250 head spring and fall-calving beef cow-calf seedstock herd operating on 4,000 acres of native rangeland plus on-campus facilities.

Key responsibilities include:



  • All aspects of seedstock beef cow-calf production consisting of but not limited to nutrition, reproduction, health, genetic selection, registration/record management, financial and marketing including preparing cattle for an annual production sale.
  • Assists with teaching, applied research, and extension activities as necessary.
  • Leads and coordinates a team of student employees and communicates with unit faculty advisors and other ASI unit managers and faculty.
  • Stewardship of university equipment, facilities, buildings, grounds, and pastures to ensure unit resources are properly managed and well-cared for in a publicly acceptable manner.

The K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry (ASI) serves students, livestock producers and the animal and food industries through teaching, research and education. The Dept. of ASI prepares students for careers in the animal and food industries.

The curriculum includes the study of nutrition, reproduction, genetics, behavior, meat science and food science with production, management, and agribusiness skills. Students are given sound professional and scientific skills, a broad education and experience for contributing to our communities across the nation and abroad. Students receive excellent advisement and mentorship from faculty and professional staff and participate in extracurricular activities to develop skills to become industry leaders.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3 years relevant experience
  • Education equivalency as determined relevant by a hiring manager


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with beef cattle production and management
  • Experience in seed-stock cattle management, evaluation and marketing
  • Experience with forage resource management and grazing
  • Experience with cattle artificial insemination and embryo transfer
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Willingness to guide student employees and other student users
  • Willingness to participate in educational opportunities for students


Other Requirements:



  • Must have valid driver's license at time of hire

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship
