Role Summary

The Associate Director of Packaging will lead one of the largest Church and Dwight packaging engineering teams, consisting of over nine (9) engineers, and oversee packaging development projects from initiation to manufacturing launch. This role will be responsible for leading packaging for nearly $2 billion of C&D business across three Strategic Business Units (SBUs) - Personal Care, Vitamins, and Women's/Sexual Health. It will support SBU decisions, manage the portfolio process, allocate resources, oversee budget management, drive process improvements and evolution, and ensure project execution. Additionally, responsibilities will include influencing both internal and external packaging relationships.

Activities will involve balancing technical needs and resources to support the critical success factors for the department's objectives. Projects will include the design, engineering, and commercialization of new product packaging, as well as optimizing quality and costs for existing packaging solutions. Broad-scope projects will explore new platforms for next-generation packaging, sustainability, design tools, processes, and techniques.

Key Accountabilities

  • The individual will represent the department in cross-functional SBU teams. They will need to drive their teams to find solutions to packaging issues, manage multiple priorities, and meet all packaging expectations.

  • The individual will define and achieve project deliverables to ensure that quality and consumer expectations are met while maintaining project deadlines.

  • Maintain currency with Regulatory and Corporate Medical Device packaging requirements, manage and communicate revisions to documentation and testing accordingly.

  • Build standardized SOPS and Work instructions to support the Packaging the Process in new electronic documentation system.

  • Drive Compliance to new manager responsibilities in the Packaging Process as well as use of Six Sigma tools to analyze data.

Typical Role Responsibilities

  • Interfacing with SBU business leaders to plan, coordinate and execute agreed project assignments for ~$2billion of Church and Dwight branded products

  • Manage a team of junior and senior engineers, providing leadership, project prioritization and delegation of activities against agreed objectives

  • Execute multiple projects within budgetary scope for commercialization of new or modified products.

  • Leverage cross-technology experience to drive successful new product launches.

  • Recommend and assess feasibility of new technologies and identify critical success drivers for the team

  • Management of several complex projects with independence

  • Coordinate with the department's senior management to define and prioritize goals & objectives.

  • Coordination of qualification programs for new product designs and materials

  • Identify and coordinate cost savings initiatives as related to product designs and materials

  • Travel to vendor and manufacturing locations for support of project activities

  • Collaborate with manufacturing sites to identify KPI's, robust qualification plans and access upstream and downstream impacts of new package designs, materials or equipment

  • Hands-on evaluation of concepts for conformance to project requirements.

  • Manage hiring, skill set gaps, development of the team and conduct performance reviews of direct reports and wider team

  • Lead technical investigation and assessment of production deviations and provide mitigation plans.

Education and Experience

  • The successful candidate should be a highly seasoned professional with a minimum of 15 years of experience in product/packaging development. Additional experience should include managerial responsibility.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the Household and Personal Care "consumer packaged goods" industries.

  • Bachelors degree required.

The candidate's experience must clearly demonstrate background in the following areas:

  • Experience in team management or serving as a team leader

  • Management of departmental projects, resources and budget

  • Coordination and completion of qualification programs for new packaging components and assemblies.

  • Identification and coordination of cost savings initiatives as related to designs and materials

  • Achieving successful quality improvement initiatives

  • Understanding of SPC and DOE (design of experiments) and development of component specifications

  • Fully developed skills in project management and extensive cross-functional interactions.

  • Familiarity and experience with Six Sigma tools is preferred.

  • Experience with a variety of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging formats for consumer products.
