Scope of Work:

The Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning Mechanic installs, services and repairs environmental-control systems in residences, department stores, office buildings, and other commercial establishments

Responsibilities:

Utilizing knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting and structural layout, mounts compressor and condenser units on platform or floor, using hand tools, following blueprints or engineering specifications, fabricates, assembles and installs ductwork and chassis parts, using portable metalworking tools and welding equipment, and installs 79 evaporator unit in chassis or in air-duct system, using hand tools. This mechanic also cuts and bends tubing to correct length and shape, using cutting and bending equipment and tools, cuts and threads pipe, using machine threading or hand-threading equipment, joins tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units by means of sleeves, couplings or unions, and solders joints, using torch, forming complete circuit for refrigerant, installs expansion and discharge valves in circuit. This worker connects motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and connects control panels to power source; installs air and water filters in completed installation, injects small amount of refrigerant into compressor to test systems and adds Freon gas to build up prescribed operating pressure. This mechanic observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to insure proper operation, tests joints and connections for gas leaks, using gauges or soap-and-water solution, wraps pipes in insulation batting and secures them in place with cement or wire bands, replaces defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses and electrical wiring to repair installed units, may install, repair and service air conditioners, ranging from fifteen to twenty tons cooling capacity in warehouses and small factory buildings.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have a minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of related experience and/or formal vocational/technical training in a variety of building or utility trades.
  • Must be EPA certified.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (Tier 1) background check.
  • On a continuous basis, sit, stand, bend, climb ladders (up to 40 feet), stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and twist for varying periods in the course of work; use hands and fingers to grasp tools; make repetitive hand and body motions; twist and reach below and above shoulder; lift or carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance; communicate with co-workers using cellular phones or telephones, write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; see in the normal vision range with or without correction to read computer screen, blueprints, and drafting plans; hear in the normal range with or without correction.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors environments. Some work is performed with exposure to low to loud noise levels; frequent fieldwork is required with exposure to a variety of weather conditions and the external environment; tasks may require working in tightly enclosed spaces and the use of ladders or other safety equipment to gain access to hard-to-reach locations; some work is performed in tunnels, crawl spaces, attics or on rooftops. Some work may require exposure to dust, particulates, unpleasant and potentially hazardous substances, and high voltage.
  • Performs all assigned duties in accordance with established policies, procedures, and directives.
  • Displays courtesy and skill in dealing with internal and external customers, coworkers, and management.
  • Accurately maintains and updates records to enable quick and efficient retrieval of information.
  • Follow up on suspense items to ensure timely completion.
  • Consistently produces quality products and service.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Complete all training within required timeline.
  • Perform all work in a safe and secure manner.
  • Completes all safety, anti-terrorism, fire extinguisher, asbestos awareness, and any other local, state, federal, installation required, and any other training deemed necessary by the supervisor or position.
  • Must maintain licenses and/or credentials required for this position.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English.
  • Must possess the ability to interact well with others in a team setting ability or alone and be able to change jobs on short notice.
  • Must be capable of working under tight time constraints in a high-volume environment with multiple priorities.
  • Highly motivated, flexible organized and must be detail oriented.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to maintain ability to access government worksite.
  • Must have practical knowledge of worksite safety, occupational hazards, and standard safety practices.
  • Must be able to perform duties under adverse weather conditions (extreme cold / heat, etc.). Outside work in winter, summer, rain, sleet, and snow and on uneven terrain - side hills and slopes.
  • Must be able to work alternate and extended shift schedules when necessary to meet the customer's mission requirements, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to perform on-call duties when necessary and report to work within the required timeframe from notification.
  • Must have and maintain a valid state driver's license to operate a company vehicle.
  • Must have a safe driving record, as defined by Company policy, to operate a company vehicle.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a drug/alcohol test and a criminal record check.
