Job Description
General Responsibilities:
Terracon's Salt Lake City office is looking for a talented addition to our Environmental Department! As one of the largest and most-established environmental consulting firms in Utah, Terracon has an incredible team of environmental professionals and amazing clients. We are looking for a staff scientist to perform asbestos and industrial hygiene surveys in our Salt Lake City office.

The selected candidate will conduct initial hazardous building material inspections, asbestos and lead abatement observations and clearance sampling, and assist project managers with industrial hygiene inspections. Duties for building inspections include collection of field documentation, air and bulk samples, review of laboratory documents, and data reporting. Duties for abatement observations include contractor interaction, operation of field air monitoring equipment, collection of field documentation, and collection of clearance air samples. Job duties with industrial hygiene inspections include performance of noise surveys, radon surveys, microbial investigations with sampling, workplace safety evaluations, and data reporting. The selected candidate will tabulate and prepare data for written reports. The candidate will be required to adhere to strict company health and safety standards.


Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects.
  • Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Demonstrate quality practices and acumen.
  • Provide consistent quality standards on proposal and project delivery.
  • Proficient scientific professional responsible for sampling suspect asbestos-containing building materials in accordance with AHERA guidelines.
  • Perform air monitoring and visual inspections during asbestos abatement projects.
  • Sampling of paint coatings (via paint chip or XRF) in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
  • May assist more senior scientists/engineers on large, more complex projects.
  • Performs site visits, field observations and field data collection or assignments.
  • Implements technical requirements to complete client projects by directing and supervising field staff to sample, test and collect data and/or document site activities.
  • Responsible for developing written proposals to clients for approval by senior level professionals.
  • Evaluates moderately complex laboratory and field data and assembles in written reports.
  • May serve as team member and participate in meetings and communications with client pertaining to specific projects/tasks.
  • May oversee work performed by lower level scientists/engineers and Technicians.
  • Works under the supervision of a Terracon Authorized Project Reviewer.
Required Skills:

Preferred Certifications and Training:
  • State of Utah Division of Air Quality Asbestos Building Inspector (ASB-Inspector)
  • State of Utah Division of Air Quality Asbestos Contractor/Supervisor (ASB-Contractor/Supervisor)
  • Salt Lake County Health Department Pre-Demolition Building Inspector (PBI-Inspector)
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER
  • Lead Paint Inspector / Mold Technician
  • Construction knowledge or understanding of building construction.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or related science field. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 3 years' related experience. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 7 years' related experience.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable violation history.
  • Certification in field of expertise required.
