Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing water, sewer, street, and drainage systems maintenance and operation and related work.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Responsible for a variety of skilled and semi-skilled services involving the City's water, sewer, street, and drainage systems.
  • Position will coordinate field activities at a crew level.
  • Position must be reasonably willing and able to respond to off-hour emergency situations affecting the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of Kirkland (or of the public).

Essential Duties

The Senior Maintenance Person may be assigned responsibilities in any one or more of water, sewer, street, or drainage operations, maintenance, or construction categories. Depending on that particular assignment, representative duties are as follows:

  • Performs, on work site, activities regarding street maintenance, traffic control (signs and signals), and vegetation control.
  • Performs, on work site, activities regarding sewer maintenance including mains, pumping stations, and appurtenances.
  • Performs, on work site, activities regarding water system maintenance of mains, valves, hydrants, meters, PRVs, and appurtenances.
  • Performs, on work site, activities regarding storm drain maintenance including mains, catch basins, detention/retention facilities, and channelization.
  • Operates all Public work's equipment and machinery including, but not limited to: backhoe loader, street sweeper, vactor, sewer jet, motor grader, dozer, and dump trucks.
  • In absence of a Lead or Supervisor, coordinates field activities at a crew level.
  • May be required to perform standby duty if there are not enough volunteers to fill the need.

Peripheral Duties

  • Helps monitor and maintain inventory of parts and tools to carry out duties. Records materials, hours, and equipment used.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment listed above.
  • Excellent knowledge of common hand and power tools is required.
  • Ability to organize and lay out work at the job site.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and maps.

Qualifications

  • Must have high school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License, current Class A combination with air and tanker endorsement.
  • Minimum four years utility and street construction and maintenance experience required. Equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy (up to 50 lbs.) and bulky object.
  • Must be a Certified Flagger in the State of Washington.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of common safety regulations and rules pertinent to work area safety and confined space entry.

Working Conditions

  • Must be willing to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Must be willing and able to climb in and out of trenches, excavation and construction equipment. Also, will work at heights and on ladders.
