This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. FTT will require proof of status prior to employment.

The Senior Materials Thermal Spray Engineer is an on-call position and will have the knowledge and experience to provide support/technical input of company projects for aerospace and land-based turbomachinery component design, manufacture, repair, and testing.

Essential Functions:



  • Document problem statements, observations, conclusions, calculations and recommendations.
  • Review and sign off on component drawings with thermal spray coating requirements for the Materials Engineering discipline.
  • Develop and present thermal spray materials and processes familiarization for internal training.
  • Support program component technical analysis and lifing tasks for thermal spray coatings.
  • Define coating destructive and non-destructive testing requirements and create test plans for characterizing materials per program requirements.
  • Evaluate thermal spray coating non-conformances and effect on properties. Provide recommendations on corrective actions.
  • Perform hands-on tasks and inspection of equipment and facilities as required.
  • Work with suppliers to define and document requirements, address technical concerns, and provide project status.
  • Identify new equipment to expand inspection capability and improve responsiveness.
  • May mentor junior engineers and laboratory personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Experience:

  • Expert knowledge of metallurgical properties of alloy and coating systems for turbomachinery and aerospace applications for new product development and repair operations.
  • Possess deep understanding of thermal spray input materials processing with knowledge of the effects on bonding and surface and volumetric coating quality.
  • Possess a strong background in manufacturing operations and processing of land base and aerospace turbomachinery components including, but not limited to, castings, forgings, and fabrications (welding and brazing).
  • Experience with thermal spray coating materials and application processes on metallic (Ni, Co, Fe, Ti, Al alloys) and non-metallic materials as well as the equipment to perform the application processes and the analytical/characterization of inspection results.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to be able to effectively summarize, document, and communicate results to program stakeholders.
  • Ability to make technical presentations internally and to customers.
  • Must be able to develop quality specifications, procedures, standard methods, training material, and related documentation for thermal spray application on aerospace turbomachinery components.


Education and Experience:



  • B.S./M.S. in Materials Science/Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 10+ years experience in Thermal Spray Engineering role(s).
  • Recognize Thermal Spray Industry or Society Accreditation preferred.
