About the role:

The Sr Director Hardware Development is part of the Active Implantable Systems Research & Development organization within Boston Scientific. This role is responsible for the development of life sustaining and life enhancing implantable systems across multiple businesses within Boston Scientific, including Cardiac Rhythm Management, Cardiac Diagnostics, and Urology. The candidate selected for this role will lead a growing organization to drive technology & product development efforts across a broad portfolio of implantable medical device systems.

Reporting into the Vice President of R&D, this role is based in Arden Hills, MN. The individual selected will lead a diverse team of engineers, technicians and support staff located in Minnesota, California, Ireland and Costa Rica. Functional responsibilities for the team include the full Electrical and Mechanical design/development lifecycle for all HDW needed to support Active Implantable Systems.

The role collaborates closely with other functions involved in the development process, including other R&D functions, Marketing, Program Management, Quality, Clinical, Regulatory, Process Development, and Operations. Key Responsibilities:



  • Leadership: Lead the hardware development organization, overseeing 5-8 direct reports and approximately 100 team members. Foster an entrepreneurial culture with a bias for action and a passion for winning.
  • Culture and Innovation: Create a culture where ideas, innovations, and accomplishments are recognized and valued. Drive a culture of innovation, accountability, agility, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
  • Program Execution: Drive the execution of program objectives across Exploratory, TDP, PDP, and Sustaining activities. Ensure alignment with organizational goals and strategic initiatives.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams across multiple sites, including R&D, Marketing, Program Management, Quality, Clinical, Regulatory, Process Development, and Operations.
  • Quality and Compliance: Promote a quality-driven work environment where the patient is always put first. Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulatory requirements.
  • Resource Management: Effectively manage budgets, resources, and organizational strategies. Build a strong and diverse talent bench by constantly recruiting, developing talent, and planning for succession.
  • Talent Development & Cultural Excellence: Lead and develop teams to achieve organizational goals, encouraging diversity and collaboration.



Minimum Qualifications:



  • BS degree in Engineering or applicable technical field.
  • 10+ years technical experience in Medical Device hardware development.
  • 5+ years of experience managing R&D teams, directly or indirectly
  • Experience with customer engagement, collaboration and interface, support of clinical trials, advisory boards, customer field visits, innovation visits, etc.
  • Experience in product portfolio management; evaluating customer needs, investment decisions & trade-offs, evaluating performance and course-correcting.
  • Proven ability to drive innovation and creatively advances new ideas when resources are tight.
  • Demonstrate global mindset by previous experience and leadership in global markets.
  • Track record of recruiting and developing top technical & managerial talent
  • Experience with early product acceleration and executing on First-In-Man (FIM) studies.
  • Ability to connect authentically with all levels and types of employees.Drive high levels of engagement and build a culture of high performance and inclusion.
  • Must be onsite at our Arden Hills, MN site campus 4-5 days per week, with up to 20% travel.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Advanced degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Biomedical Engineering
  • Implantable Medical Device hardware development is highly preferred

  • Experience managing vendor/partner relationships involved in any aspect of the product development process.
  • Leader adept at analysis and utilization of disciplined, product development principles and ensuring a strong culture of adherence.

Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.

Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
