R&D Associate Chemist

This role will lead projects and/or project teams as a member of the GSC R&D Brands Architectural Lab at Breen Technology Center. This position is accountable for leading and/or contributing to the development and reformulation of architectural paint products.

Job duties include contact with other employees and access to confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. The Company therefore has determined that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect the business and its operations and reputation and is necessary to protect the safety of the Company's staff, employees, and business relationships.

Responsibilities include:

1. Lab Support/Product Development
* Accountable for contributing to the reformulation, development, maintenance, enhancement, and assessment of products through planning, executing, and analysis of experiments with clear and accurate results.
* Accountable for contributing to the execution and/or the solution of problems of minimal to moderate complexity.
* Designs and executes experiments, checks for color acceptance, compares competitor projects, compares new projects to old projects, completes scale ups, performs basic paint processes, participates in designs of experiments, makes pilot batches, maintains and orders supplies, and performs ladder studies.
* Accountable for providing timely and accurate support to help resolve field complaints, raw material issues, manufacturing problems, and support existing and new product development efforts and competitive product analysis.
* Follows standards of excellence by following ITM's (Institutional Test Methods) and ICM's (Institutional Calibration Methods).

2. Communication
* Provides necessary project updates to manager/group leader.
* Communicates effectively within a primary network of contacts.
* Responsible for inputting data and data analysis.
* Maintains accurate and up to date project documentation.
* Gives group presentations, project related/update presentations and special request presentations.
* Communicates detailed ideas concisely through written communication within the department.
* Attends committee meetings, customer, department, group, impromptu, ISO, marketing, performance reviews, project updates, town hall, quality, team, vendor, special request, and safety meetings, and attends in-house and outside seminars.
* Obtain a small network of resources but may still need manager's advice on where to go when an issue arises.

3. Safety
* Complies with, and displays knowledge of, all safety and security regulations
* Demonstrates knowledge and safe use of chemicals, raw materials, substrates, and instruments.
* Maintains a clean work area
* Maintain the proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
* Accountable for following chemical hygiene plan and safe laboratory practices

4. Operations Support
* Supports operations through raw material evaluations, opportunity rex database, test-batch database, and regulatory compliance.

5. Other Duties as Assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATION:
* Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status).

FORMAL EDUCATION:
Required:
* Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics ("STEM") field

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
Required:
* Proven problem-solving and decision-making abilities
* Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
* Computer knowledge for inputting, communication, and data analysis using Microsoft Software Applications
* Excellent organization and planning skills

Preferred:
* Experience in a lab setting
* High level of initiative and leadership ability
* Ability to interact effectively with various levels of technical experience
* Basic knowledge of coating concepts and property calculations
* Basic knowledge of statistics and data analysis
* Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances
* Project leadership/management experience

TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

* Working knowledge of basic lab equipment
* Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

* Knowledge of basic coating process, milling equipment, coating application
* Ability to tailor communication to fit the needs of the audience
* High level of initiative and leadership ability
* Excellent organization and planning skills
* Basic to intermediate understanding of DOE, statistical analysis, DFSS methodology

10%

Upon completion of construction, the individual selected for this role will primarily work at the new Sherwin-Williams Global Technology Center in Brecksville, Ohio. Construction is expected to be complete in 2025. Until then, the role will be based at Breen Technology Center, located at 601 Canal Road, Cleveland, OH 44113.
