The University of Virginia Darden School of Business seeks an experienced and highly motivated professional to join its Strategic IT team in our Rosslyn, VA location. The Director, IT & Digital Infrastructure will play a critical role in supporting Darden's growth in the Washington, D.C. area. This position is located in-person in the Darden's Sands Family Grounds (SFG) in the Rosslyn neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia - a beautiful facility overlooking the Washington DC skyline. The Director, IT & Digital Infrastructure has oversight and manages day-to-day operations of Darden's IT and AV support, ensuring that systems, services, and infrastructure work reliably and securely for SFG. This position supports multiple stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, and external clients. In addition to providing guidance and leadership, the Director also directly supports end-users and clients as needed. Reporting to senior leaders on the Client and Technical Services (CTS) and Digital Infrastructure teams, the Director will work closely with both leaders to ensure effective resource management and priority alignment. Responsibilities include managing potential resource conflicts, coordinating helpdesk and AV operations, and fostering collaboration across teams. The position may include evening and weekend hours and will have limited remote working hours. Responsibilities: Management:
Direct the activities of IT technicians and AV engineers, both to directly support customers and to assist with department updates and directives. Assign the proper staffing to support events, classroom activities, and issue resolution. Effectively manage resources, including technician assignments and equipment use, by coordinating with senior leadership to ensure balanced support for both IT and AV operations. Manage staff by leading and influencing; encourage and develop plans for career and professional development. Create opportunities for employees to gain work experience utilizing new skills. Develop operating and maintenance policies and procedures to ensure that the team operates effectively and reliably. Implement cross-training programs for IT and AV staff to enhance technical skill sets, promote operational flexibility, and ensure both teams can provide broader support across systems and services. Facilitate opportunities for AV staff to gain IT skills and vice versa to enhance overall team capability. Manage interactions with outside integrators for major projects or technology repairs.
Operations:
Develop service level agreements (SLAs), reports, and presentations. Oversee and assist in the development of guides for users and technicians, such as Knowledgebase Articles, work instructions, and design documents. Provide direct customer support for handling IT and AV escalated issues. Provide oversight and guidance of the incident by engaging customers, customer communications, and efficient service restoration. Facilitate cross-departmental collaboration across functional teams, engaging senior leadership and key stakeholders within and outside SFG to ensure consistency in solution development and delivery.
Strategic Planning and Innovation:
Collaborate with senior leadership to set priorities for operational improvements and innovations needed in IT and AV infrastructure. Collaborate on long-term planning for IT and AV initiatives. Proactive review of technology systems to identify potential near-term and long-term actions. Manage the preparation and submittal of departmental budgets. Ensure that allocated expenditures and secure procurement practices conform with university standards and applicable laws and regulations. Maintain currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience required. Equivalent combination of experience, education and/or certifications may be substituted in lieu of degree. Strong ITIL processes knowledge. Possess thorough knowledge of information technology concepts and terminology; Windows/Mac desktop OS and supported software applications; network fundamentals; IP protocol and fundamental troubleshooting techniques. Communicate complex technical information to novice computer users; diagnose and resolving common desktop software, hardware and communications issues including the ability to use enterprise troubleshooting tools. Demonstrated expertise in audiovisual and networking technology, with the ability and curiosity to learn new technologies. Knowledge of enterprise AV control system technologies is preferred. Understanding of network and information security principles, concepts and best operating procedures. Excellent project management skills and the ability to work within a matrixed environment. Demonstrated ability in managing resources, capabilities, and capacity to meet both existing and new business demand. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and motivate a team. Advanced knowledge of process improvement, cost analysis techniques, purchasing principles, procedures, regulations, and standards. Ability to develop and deliver presentations; gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports; organize, prioritize, and schedule work. Ability to address highly complex or unprecedented problems and use experience, judgment, and innovation in creating solutions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey technical guidance and information to users and to provide excellent customer service. Demonstrated ability to interact with internal and external constituents in a professional and collegial manner. Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures, use initiative and judgment in problem solving, and work proactively to anticipate and meet needs. Experience in dealing with internal /external auditors. Expertise in risk management and assessments. Experience in higher education, supporting faculty, staff and students strongly preferred.
