Senior Electrical Engineer, Robotics (Pittsburgh, PA)

We are looking for a Senior EE who will be a member our Smith+Nephew Robotics team in Pittsburgh, PA. You will develop firmware and electrical designs of new products from concept phase through production and launch phases using the processes as identified in the S&N Quality System.

You are Technical Lead on one or more design teams and working independently to technical knowledge and experience to create and drive electrical design results to meet the project requirements.

What will you be doing?

  • Define design inputs, electrical requirements, prototyping and testing protocols.
  • Board-bring up and functional testing of PCBs and product troubleshooting activities
  • Guide teams with their test plans and experiments to achieve design & validation goals.
  • Participate in design reviews during development sprints. Provide technical feedback to drive quality design.
  • Following configuration management processes for electrical design development and promoting continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as Project Managers, Systems Engineering, Test, Manufacturing, Quality and Regulatory for a successful product delivery.
  • Collaborate with EE/FW engineers to ensure requirements and design specifications are communicated and dependencies clearly understood; support the development of design specifications of the product.
  • Maintain device/product specifications and design documentation to align with requirements of SN design control specifications and relevant regulatory bodies such as requirements development, risk management, design verification etc
  • Write embedded test code for testing all hardware components

What will you need to be successful?

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering with 5+ years of experience or Masters with 3+ years of experience
  • 3+ years of experience in Altium including developing schematics and layouts
  • 1+ years of working with DFT and DFM for electrical design with manufacturers
  • Experience in integrating different sensors, motors, and computing technologies into electrical systems.
  • Hands-on experience with soldering and development and troubleshooting of both hardware and software for embedded targets.
  • Good understanding of communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, RS232, RS485, 1-WIRE, CAN, video and USB
  • Experience with advanced 32-bit multi-core microcontrollers, and with board bring-up, test plan creation with low-level C embedded application development
  • Proficient with reading and reviewing schematics, data sheet and hardware design.
  • Experience with low level debugging using scope, JTAG, and software debuggers
  • Strong background in designing boards for EMC, ESD and EMI considerations.

  • Experience with software configuration tools such as Git, subversion and defect management tools such as Jira, and requirement management tools.S
  • Strong understanding of DFT and DFM in electrical board design
  • Experience with a regulated software development processes or familiarity with FDA and ISO standards like IEC 62304 is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of motor control development and motor tuning.
  • Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols such as RS232, RS485, 1-WIRE, TCP/IP, UDP and EtherCAT
Location: Pittsburgh, PA - hybrid role, you'll be expected onsite Tues/Weds/Thurs
