BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY: The Associate Dean for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (ADGPS) in the Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) advises the Dean, Executive Dean, Associate Dean for Research, and other senior staff, regarding issues related to creating innovative graduate student education and a supportive environment for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. This position will be responsible for overseeing systems that ensure that all graduate programs and postdoctoral scholars in the CCOM have support for their graduate students. The ADGPS will develop a robust recruiting strategy that brings in top candidates for all graduate student programs that involve the CCOM. Additionally, the ADGPS will supervise the program director for the umbrella Biomedical Sciences Program with the shared goal of building global competencies for our graduate and postdoctoral students that align with federal training program requirements, while also preparing learners to serve in a variety of job environments. The ADGPS and Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies must work collaboratively across programs, departments, the Graduate College, and University of Iowa, to leverage shared services and activities that benefit trainee career development and well-being. Candidates could become a member of one or more of several departments upon appointment. KEY DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Create innovative educational programs that can advantage the breadth of scientific trainees in CCOM.
- Develop strategies to recruit high quality graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
- Coordinate and align activities within the continuum of CCOM graduate student educational programs while aligning with the UI Graduate College.
- Develop a welcoming presence for all graduate students and postdoctoral scholars that provides an additional support system that extends the reach of the departments and individual graduate programs. This also entails creating a framework for conflict resolution for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
- Develop and coordinate a framework for supporting accreditation activities for the graduate educational programs in the CCOM (though the lead for these activities may reside within the UI Graduate College).
- Enhance the CCOM's national visibility in graduate student educational innovation.
- Supervise team members focused on operational and programmatic aspects of the umbrella Biosciences Graduate Program.
- Advise department chairs, deans, and directors regarding educational activities and initiatives.
- Ensure efforts are aligned with the CCOM, UI Graduate College, and the University of Iowa's Strategic Plans.
- Serve on relevant university and collegiate committees.
- Represent the college with local, state, and nationalassociations and networks geared towards addressing graduate student education.
- Prepare reports and proposals as requested by executive leadership of the college and university.
- Participate in annual events including the Graduate Student White Coat Ceremony, Commencement, Investiture Ceremonies, Graduation
- Recognition Banquets, and other ceremonial and celebratory events held during the academic year
- Help organize, promote, and maintain T32 and individual pre-doctoral grant proposals.
- Support career development activities for pre- and post-doctoral fellows.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Supervision is received from the Associate Dean for Research and the Executive Dean. Effective collaboration with other Associate/Assistant Deans and DEOs is necessary on a regular basis. SUPERVISION PROVIDED: Supervision is provided to the Program Director for the umbrella Biomedical Sciences Program and administrative staff in the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

Education Requirement: |
- MD, MD/PhD or PhD is required

Required Qualifications: |
- Track record of mentoring graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars in a research lab setting, from recruitment through culmination of training, and shepherding trainees onto subsequent job opportunities.
- Experience serving as an educational leader in graduate student education and/or postdoctoral scholar education activities.
- Experience creating courses or activities that serve graduate student education.
- Track record of publications and national presentations that demonstrate excellence and innovation in research and/or education.
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and act as a change agent and consensus builder.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience regarding effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Strong management and planning skills.
- Experience with promoting a collaborative climate that recognizes, celebrates, and rewards graduate students or postdoctoral scholars.

Desirable Qualifications: |
- Demonstrated ability to organize educational programs that integrate educational activities in multiple departments.
- Knowledge of principles and application of administrative, fiscal, and related faculty matters for institutions of higher education.
- Experience in obtaining external training grants or supplements or philanthropic funding.
- Experience developing T32 grants
