The Senior Patient Surgical Scheduling Coordinator job coordinates and schedules appointments for surgeries and follow-up appointments for multiple physicians at multiple sites (VCUHS ACC, Main OR, Stony Point and Southside Regional). This job is responsible for preauthorization/precertification of all surgeries for assigned physicians at all patient locations. This job also responds to all inquiries from patients, insurance carriers and PCP's by telephone and/ or written correspondence using quality customer service.
The Senior Patient Surgical Scheduling Coordinator job works with department billing staff to investigate all denials, and with assistance from providers, resubmits appeals as necessary. This position serves in a lead capacity by participating in hiring process, training/mentoring new employees.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: N/A Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: N/A Experience REQUIRED: Minimum of two (2) years' experience in a medical office/acute care setting to include the use of medical terminology, customer service and appointment scheduling Minimum of three (3) years' experience with third party medical insurance, HMO and managed care Minimum of (2) years' experience in surgery scheduling
Experience PREFERRED: Four (4) years previous experience in surgery scheduling Previous experience with CPT and ICD-10 coding for medical claims processing Work experience using electronic medical billing/order entry/registration systems.
Education/training REQUIRED: (Note: work experience may be considered in lieu of credentials not required by law with HR approval. Work experience must be specific to role) High School Diploma or equivalent
Education/training PREFERRED: Associate Degree in Business Management or closely related field from an accredited program
Independent action(s) required: Maintains master schedules for each physician by scheduling surgery cases and managing departmental block time. Able to use judgment and critical thinking skills to ensure minimal disruption and optimal use of block time. Ability to perform daily activities with minimal supervision. Functions in a self-directed manner in the accomplishment of routine activities. Issues that involve violation of VCUHS policies and procedures, involve conflicts of a sensitive nature or that would be considered unusual in nature are to be brought to the attention of the immediate supervisor immediately.
Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): Will be required to function as back up to supervisor in the absence of the assigned supervisor.
