SMT (Surface Mount Technology) Setup Technician

Job purpose:

Setup Technicians play a critical role in the electronics manufacturing process. Responsible for configuring, operating and maintaining specialized machinery that places electronic components onto Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). This role demands a strong blend of technical expertise, attention to detail and problem-solving skills to ensure high quality and efficient production.

Nature of Duties:



  • Setup and operate SMT equipment, including solder paste printers, pick-and-place machines, reflow ovens and Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) systems
  • Load correct components into feeders and prepare feeders for placement on the SMT machines
  • Program machines with appropriate parameters for specific PCB designs and components
  • Perform machine adjustments (e.g., conveyor width, nozzle configuration, component placement) to optimize performance and minimize defects.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, production issues, and quality defects.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and calibration on SMT machines to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other technicians to resolve complex technical issues and implement corrective actions.


Qualifications:



  • Experience in setting up, operating, and maintaining various SMT assembly equipment (printers, pick-and place, reflow ovens, AOI)
  • Strong understanding of PCB assembly processes, including surface mount and through-hole technology
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics and work instructions
  • Knowledge of electronic components, their functions, adn polarity
  • Basic computer skills
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills, identifying and resolving issues quickly and effectively
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Manual dexterity, good hand eye coordination
  • May require the use of microscopes


Education/Experience:



  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associates degree or technical school certification in electronics, electrical engineering or related field is preferred
  • 1-5 years of experience in SMT manufacturing or a related electronics assembly environment
  • IPC certification (IPC-A-610, J-STD-001) a plus
