The Senior Associate Scientist will become the technical expert regarding pigmented, UV curable products for Fiber Optic Materials. They will contribute to the culture of excellence at Covestro's Elgin R&D Center, embody the Covestro Behaviors, and actively contribute to our safety culture.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Work on R&D projects relevant to the fiber optics business.
  • Develop new and adjust existing coating products according to the company's R&D strategy and project portfolio to realize the company's objectives.
  • Design, implement, and document experiments to address business needs.
  • Interpret data, point out trends, and make recommendations for future work.
  • Prepare and present research reports to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in meetings with customers and use insights from the market to shape future work.
  • Work together with a team of experts to define new approaches to industry problems.
  • Transfer technologies from R&D to operation.
  • When applicable, work with the team to develop and file IP.
  • Develop new, as well as modify existing, pigmented UV curable coating formulations.
  • Use experimental design to optimize formulations for specific applications.
  • Work with photo initiators, monomers, oligomers and pigments to achieved desired color and performance characteristics.
  • Achieve precise color matching of formulated coatings to customer specifications or standards.
  • Evaluate raw materials from various suppliers.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's in Chemistry or related field with 3+ years of industrial experience in color formulations with pigment dispersions; OR Masters in Organic chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Coatings with 2+ years of industrial experience in color formulations with pigment dispersions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of industrial experience in color formulations with pigment dispersions
  • Experience in ink and coating formulation, especially UV-curable inks

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Understanding of color science and color matching principles
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with ink and coating testing equipment
  • Experience with UV cure acrylate chemistry
  • Experience with polyurethane chemistry
  • Experience with materials science
  • Experience with (Technical) Project Management

Pay range: $78,000 - $144,800

This is a full-time role that includes competitive pay, annual bonus potential, paid time off & holidays, 401K with company match & additional retirement contribution, tuition reimbursement, student loan relief program, parental & care giving leave and medical, dental, vision coverage (no waiting period).
