Job Title: Technical Writer

Operating Company: Environmental Solutions Group - Heil Environmental

Location: Fort Payne, AL

Reports To: Technical Publications Manager

Department: Operations

Summary:

The Technical Writer will be responsible for creating, editing, and maintaining a variety of technical documents and publications. This role involves close collaboration with various departments to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards. Key responsibilities include technical writing, information management, product documentation, and communication with team members and external partners.

Essential Job Functions:

Technical Writing of Product Parts Catalogs:

  • Research and work with multi-level bills of material.
  • Create 2-D exploded isometric illustrations with callouts from CAD models for print or electronic media.
  • Export parts lists from Engineering data to create parts list tables.
  • Update and maintain existing parts catalog content as design changes occur.

Technical Writing of Product Operation Manuals, Service Manuals, and Service Bulletins:

  • Research, observe, write, and edit procedures and instructions for print or electronic media.
  • Ensure publications and manuals meet or exceed customer and company specifications for content and accuracy while complying with industry standards.

Information Management:

  • Research, organize, record, edit, and publish large quantities of information in various print and electronic formats using authoring, content management, and multi-channel publishing software.
  • Develop and maintain Help Center Knowledge Bases to ensure accurate and up-to-date information is available to users.

Product Safety and Informational Decals and Wall Charts:

  • Create and edit product safety and informational decal drawings, wall charts, and print vendor artwork.

Observation and Documentation:

  • Observe the production, operation, and servicing of products to create work instructions and operation and service procedures.
  • Photograph and document products and product functions with emphasis on safety, accuracy, and clarity.

Product Understanding:

  • Develop an understanding of the company's products including the safe installation, operation, maintenance, and repair.

Review and Compliance:

  • Review manufacturer and trade catalogs, drawings, and other data relative to operation, maintenance, and service of equipment.
  • Ensure all technical documentation complies with industry standards.

Validation and Proofing:

  • Validate written procedures with the assistance of Engineering, Technical Services, Quality, and Risk Management team members.
  • Accurately and proficiently proof manuals, decals, Service Bulletins, and other documentation prior to publication.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Communicate and work effectively with team members and other individuals and groups within and outside of the organization.
  • Coordinate with print vendors to ensure accurate and timely delivery of printed materials.

Travel:

  • Travel occasionally to customer locations, meetings, and production facilities.

Other Duties:

  • Perform other duties as required, which may include assignments in job classifications other than the primary assignment.

Job Specifications:

  • Education:
    • Associate Degree in Technical Writing, Drafting and Design, or Manufacturing field is preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience:
    • Three or more years of related experience and/or training as a Technical Writer or in a manufacturing environment.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Ability to communicate effectively using electronic media and in written and verbal forms.
    • Great interpersonal skills for making telephone and direct personal contact with internal and external personnel and making formal presentations to small groups.
  • Teamwork and Organization:
    • Able to work as a team member, highly organized, work well under stress, and handle multiple tasks.
  • Software Proficiency:
    • Competent in the use of standard software applications such as Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • Experience with advanced authoring and content management software is required.
    • Experience with design software such as Adobe Illustrator is required.
    • Experience with online Knowledge Base software is a plus.
    • Experience with Creo Parametric, AutoCAD, and IsoDraw is a plus.
    • Experience with product data management/business management software such as Windchill PDMLink and JD Edwards is a plus.

Applies a sense of urgency to resolve problems or creates opportunities that will increase productivity and create value. Shares best practices with other employees across the business.

Accountability: Accepts responsibility and accessibility for both the strategic planning and the successful implementation of all projects/programs/duties as outlined in this job description. Advises supervisor of concerns, problems and progress of work in a timely manner.
