Job Description

The UMKC School of Nursing and Health Studies is seeking a Part-time Research Assistant to provide research support for a nutrition education intervention in rural Missouri middle schools. This position will provide an opportunity to engage with middle school teachers and gain experience with delivering nutrition education. We are looking for someone who is energetic and good with communication and has a passion for community health!

Responsibilities:

The percent of time spent in each activity will vary depending on the phase of the study (i.e., start-up, initial phase of recruitment, data collection, and study wrap-up) and with other study events (eg., regular team meetings, conducting focus groups, preparation of abstracts for presentation, and the writing of manuscripts)

General responsibilities include:

  • Creating and maintaining a system to track subject accrual and progress through the study, particularly regarding participant incentives
  • Assuring study fidelity which includes communication with study sites and subjects
  • Assuring data integrity which includes developing and implementing a plan to enhance the completeness and accuracy of study data
  • Assisting with developing and refining all study forms for data collection
  • Providing reports at all project team meetings
  • Contacting potential study patients, screening for inclusion criteria, and obtaining subject consent
  • Becoming familiar with the RedCAP data system including downloading the data and preparing it for analyses
  • Alerting the PI to trends requiring systematic investigation
  • Disseminating participant incentives
  • Assisting with data interpretation and dissemination of study findings Making specific protocol interpretations and clarifications to all research team members as needed
  • Making decisions related to implementation of the study protocol
  • Independently determining when something occurs with a patient, the study protocol, or management of study data that should be reported to the PI
  • Providing leadership by assisting the PI and other team members in making management and administrative decisions
  • Assisting in data collection (surveys and focus groups)

Skills and Abilities:

  • Educate and orient study sites and subjects to study procedures
  • Assist with developing and refining study forms for data collection
  • Making meaningful contributions to team meetings
  • Download research programs on a computer and download study data into a remote data management system
  • Monitor study data and identify trends and data that require review
  • Prepare data summaries including basic descriptive statistics
  • Organize and maintain research records
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills for the study intervention with superior organizational skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently.
  • Possess knowledge of MyPlate and nutrition

This part-time, non-benefit eligible, academic position will average 10 hours per week. Personal transportation is needed to make study site visits for data collection

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree is required for this position.

Previous research or community engagement experience is preferred.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements. This position is 100% externally funded for up to 1-year.
