JOB SUMMARY
Works under minimal direction to provide engineering skills and support within a biomedical or clinical engineering laboratory, or research setting.

In the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Texas-Southwestern, the research engineer will support ongoing human intracortical neuroscience and translational brain-computer interfacing research. Experiments involve human participants with temporary or chronically implanted deep brain stimulation (DBS) devices, stereotactic electro-encephalography (sEEG) and microelectrode arrays for neural recording and stimulation. With these experiments we aim to provide personalized optimization strategies for brain stimulation and recording protocols to assist with mental disorders (e.g., depression, schizophrenia, memory decline) as well as sensory and motor disabilities (e.g., chronic pain, paralysis). The tasks of the research engineer range from setting up the required hard-and software for real-time neural data analysis to developing artifact rejection pipelines that allow for simultaneous neural stimulation and recording, guiding safe data storage practices, developing communication protocols between our real-time neural analysis pipeline and new hardware (robotic soft-glove, exoskeleton, etc.), and creating customized hardware for participant interaction (e.g., lever with a force sensor to measure ongoing movements).
