Position Summary

The Director, Storm Warning Meteorologists leads the 24x7x365 operational team of Storm Warning Meteorologists (SWM) which produce the "Gold Standard" of weather risk mitigation known as the SkyGuard Service for AccuWeather for Business (AFB) customers enabling companies to make the best weather-impacted decisions. This service is at the core of AccuWeather's mission to save lives and protect property. The Director is responsible for providing inspirational, engaging leadership of the team while ensuring the forecasts and warnings with Superior Accuracy are delivered to businesses with excellent customer service. This includes reviewing team member performance, developing career paths, recruiting new talent, and encouraging a positive and collaborative team environment where all team members are performing at their best. This position is part of the Forecasting Leadership Team.

Responsibilities



  • Provide engaging leadership of the Storm Warning Meteorologist (SWM) team, fostering a positive, collaborative environment that consistently delivers world-class SkyGuard Service and supports respectful dialogue, effective communication, and consistent forecasting across teams and offices.


  • Supervise and support SWMs across all shifts to ensure high-quality customer service, operational excellence, and individual career development.


  • In collaboration with supervisors and managers, engage regularly with SWMs to understand career ambitions, identify areas for growth, and support individual development plans, including continuous education and career path planning.


  • Provide leadership and support to supervisors and managers who refine written career development roadmaps for each SWM.


  • Play a lead role in interviewing and hiring processes and practices, including coordination with HR to maintain a strong candidate pipeline and ensure an engaging, effective recruiting and interview process.


  • Collaborate with the Training Coordinator to develop and manage training plans for all team members, ensuring ongoing performance feedback and skill development.


  • Hold regular communication sessions and maintain ongoing coaching and counseling to improve performance, productivity, and skill sets.


  • Maintain correct staffing and scheduling levels to optimize customer service delivery.


  • In partnership with other members of the Operations Leadership Team, address client feedback and operational issues promptly, removing barriers to productivity and quality.


  • Encourage continuous improvement by gathering ideas from the team, working with leadership to evaluate and implement changes, and providing feedback on outcomes.


  • Ensure smooth daily operations by collaborating closely with Assistant Managers, Supervisors, and the Forecasting team in State College, PA, promoting cross-team integration and efficiency.


  • Develop, communicate and drive to completion team goals aligned with corporate strategy to enhance day-to-day operations and service value.


  • Lead the operational implementation of new products and processes by coordinating training and incorporating team feedback.


  • Uphold and instill the AccuWeather Forecasting Philosophy across the team's processes and products.


  • Promote a "weather-focused" environment that encourages and allows time for all team members to scrutinize the weather, searching for ways to add skill and value to forecasts.


  • Occasionally perform operational shifts to stay current with on-the-ground challenges and opportunities.


  • Conduct performance reviews and assist in developing compensation plans and employee agreements in partnership with the Vice President of Forecasting.



Qualifications



  • 5 or more years of experience in meteorology or a related field.


  • At least 3 years of leadership experience, preferably leading small to mid-size teams.


  • BS in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a related technical field


  • Experience in leading people to achieve a common goal whether it be individual projects, small teams, or large groups.


  • Proven ability to translate strategic business concepts to tactical actions in an operational environment.


  • Utilizes a team-first approach with a keen interest in leading and developing people.


  • Interest and experience in mentorship of peers, students, etc.


  • Strong knowledge of atmospheric processes and weather forecasting.


  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills both written and oral.


  • Experienced in communicating weather information to customers.


  • Proven ability to synthesize and convey complex meteorological ideas into actionable forecasts for various users.


  • Proven ability to effectively write and present technical information to both scientific and non-scientific users.


  • Understands how to make quick-decisions in a deadline-driven environment by incorporating multiple data points and opinions.


  • Ability to work with and understand computer and information systems.
