Responsibilities

Job Summary
The Histology Tech II performs technical procedures in Histology, including specimen embedding, microtomy, staining, and ancillary tasks. Serves as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team. Responsible for quality, efficiency, and safety in the performance of laboratory functions. Actively troubleshoots and resolves problems and documents corrective actions with minimal guidance. Ensures compliance with all state, CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and HIPAA regulations as applicable and incorporates these compliance practices into daily routines. Actively participates in laboratory programs established to maintain/improve the quality of laboratory services, individual growth, and safety in the work environment.
Essential Functions
  • Microtomy - creates adequate histologic sections with proper leveling between each section applied onto glass slides
  • Assists with daily immunohistochemistry (IHC) and special stain (SS) workload by receiving IHC/SS orders and pending list requests. Retrieves slides and/or blocks from request and performs IHC/SS by preparing, loads/unloads stainers, and performs appropriate quality control checks.
  • Embeds tissue using correct orientation and positioning for sectioning.
  • Performs recuts and additional stains including special and immunohistochemistry stains, as requested by a Pathologist
  • Performs and documents instrument and equipment maintenance and learns troubleshooting on all equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Assists with filing as needed
  • Assists with training new employees and mentoring students
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree Required for HTL-Histotechnologist certification - Preferred
  • Associate's Degree Required for HT-Histotechnician certification - Required
Experience
  • 1 year experience working in a Histology Laboratory - Required
Licenses and Certifications
  • Lab\HT - Histology Tech ASCP - Required
  • Lab\HTL - Histology Technologist ASCP - Preferred
