Position Summary: The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) is seeking a Public Relations Intern to support media relations efforts for the museum and the MIM Music Theater. Working closely with the Communications Specialist and members of the Creative team, the intern will gain hands-on experience in media outreach, content development, and strategic communications in a nonprofit arts environment. Hours and Compensation: This is a paid, part-time internship based onsite at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. Interns are expected to work approximately 20 hours per week. Scheduling is flexible and will be coordinated to accommodate both the intern's academic commitments and the department's needs. Compensation is at the current Arizona state minimum wage. Position Responsibilities:
- Research and build media contact lists across national, local, and niche outlets
- Draft pitch emails and assist with journalist outreach and follow-ups
- Conduct media "call-downs" and support event invitation efforts
- Track media coverage and maintain organized internal records and databases
- Assist with media visits, interviews, and photoshoots
- Research editorial calendars and media opportunities to support outreach strategy
- Submit MIM events, concerts, and exhibitions to online and print event calendars
- Ensure all written materials align with MIM's brand voice and messaging
- Collaborate with the team to support consistent, strategic communication goals
- Contribute to promotion efforts for MIM's upcoming special exhibition, concert series, signature events, and more
Qualifications:
- Current student enrolled in an accredited degree program, or a recent college graduate
- Strong research, writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple deadlines
- Proactive, adaptable, and able to work independently or collaboratively
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Previous experience or coursework in public relations, marketing, or communications preferred
- A demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in PR or a related field
