POSITION SUMMARY

The Certified Medical Assistant in Occupational Health provides assistance in the examination and treatment of patients, under Physician/Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner supervision, in the ambulatory service clinical setting. Duties include: chart review before patient clinical visit; assisting physician with procedures/treatments; equipment operation; assisting patients in preparation for examination/procedure; performs venipuncture; specimen collection and submission to appropriate laboratory; cleaning and sterilization of instrumentation; order and inventory supplies; records and documents in medical record; maintains examination/procedure room supplies; assists with efficient patient flow; assists with orientation of new staff; and participates in quality assurance programs. Location is Bethesda, MD.



Duties Include:



  • Performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/advanced level provider and/or a registered nurse
  • Duties may include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measurement, and documentation of vital signs, and assisting providers with patient exams, and telephone and clerical support
  • Position may float to other sites/locations within the system
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality, and safety standards
  • Complies with governmental regulations and accreditation standards
  • Assists providers with patient preparation for examination, minor office procedures and with the examination and education of patients
  • Supports other members of the clinical care team, assuring optimal best-practice patient flow; manages variable and unpredictable patient volume throughout the workday
  • Provides clerical support and serves as backup for the Service Coordinator or other team members as needed
  • Participates in team huddles to review and prepare for scheduled visits
  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives to improve care quality and safety Ensures ongoing compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and quality/safety standards by maintaining and auditing temperature logs, ensuring medication supplies are current/unexpired, checking and maintaining emergency equipment, area free of clutter, and other related tasks
  • Performs selected patient and laboratory testing consistent with the scope of the practice, including but not limited to Point of Care Testing, tuberculosis skin testing, and vision testing (dependent upon provider and site requirements)
  • Documents medication, medication changes, vital signs, chief complaint and any relevant fields in the electronic health record (EHR) or other venues based on policy


HOURS: Days 40 hours
LOCATION: Suburban Hospital - Occupational Health

EDUCATION


  • High school diploma or GED
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant or Nursing Assistant Training Program or specific applicable primary medical care MA experience may be substituted for formal training provided current certification.



CERTIFICATIONS



  • Certified Medical Assistant requires successful completion of the AAMA Medical Assistant Certification Exam.
  • Medical Office Assistant certification is preferred.
  • Must maintain certification/ registration throughout employment.
  • Valid CPR certification required upon hire and recertification required every two years.


Work Experience:



  • Two plus years of experience preferred. Preferably in a medical practice/healthcare setting.


KNOWLEDGE

  • Effective interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn and use a computer-based patient appointment scheduling and registration system.
  • Ability to prioritize daily tasks and assignments.
  • Familiar with medical terminology and documenting in electronic health record.
  • Demonstrated competency in all skills related to the performance of patient care.


Salary Range: Minimum $18.15/hour - Maximum $26.32/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.

In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
