Reporting to a Children's National Research Institute (CNRI) Principal Investigator or Research Core Director, the Research Core Associate Director ("Associate Director") is responsible for the overall operation and administration of a research core, including the employment and training of personnel who are competent to perform research procedures, record and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently, and for ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and institutional policies.

This position is responsible for the operations of a research core, which includes but is not limited to basic and applied research projects, quality improvement projects within the core, and the development of new research objectives, technologies and therapies that ultimately improve patient care. The Associate Director encourages team members to use the scientific method to push the boundaries of human knowledge and develop new treatments and technologies. The individual will serve as a liaison with internal and external stakeholders and will be responsible for identifying new sources of revenue for the program, including grant funding, philanthropy, or manufacturing service contracts. The individual will represent the research core in leadership meetings as assigned and will be expected to make important contributions to the execution of the core strategic plan. He/she will represent the research core and institution in a professional way and will participate regionally, nationally and internationally in a manner that demonstrates the expertise, research, and novel therapies available at the hospital. As delegated the Associate Director is engaged in planning, directing, and fostering new interdisciplinary initiatives, including research, education and training, and/or outreach initiatives across disciplines.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
Medical Doctor (M.D.) (Required) Or
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
5 Years of progressive, specialized experience in field of research; demonstrated record documenting excellence in research and teaching (Required)

Functional Accountabilities
Responsible Conduct of Research



  • Consistently demonstrate adherence with the standards for the ethical and responsible conduct of research.


  • Plan, conduct, and manages research projects within the federal and institutional regulations and policies.


  • Responsible for appropriate use of research funds.


  • Supervise, train and mentor staff, graduate/post-doctoral students and junior faculty.


Commitment to Research



  • Conduct research of significant scientific value in the basic and/or translational science area(s) relevant to his/her practice specialty.


  • Participate in reviewing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.


  • Publishes in peer-reviewed, scientific, quality and management journals.


  • Submit applications for grants or contracts for funding of research projects.


  • Participate in research committees or workshop special interest groups.


  • Participate in educational programs and teaching assignments.


Program Management



  • As assigned, assume responsibility for leadership activities both within the Core, Center, CNRI, and across the organization in support of research.


  • Implement strategic plan through management of day-to-day operations of the research laboratory or center.


  • Assist Core Director in the development, implementation and evaluation of services, programs, performance standards, and policies and procedures to achieve departmental goals.


  • Develop and implements standard policies and procedures.


  • Collaborate with principal investigator to evaluate current and new program initiatives for effectiveness, feasibility and cost.


  • Assists principal investigator with preparation of grant applications and publications.


  • Hire, train, develop and directs assigned staff to meet core operational objectives.


  • Develop research staffing plan and deploy staff appropriately to optimize productivity and ensure quality services in support of core activities.


Budget and Financial Management



  • As delegated develop comprehensive annual and long-range budgets and plans consistent with the Core's objectives and ensures that budget and performance targets are met.


  • Oversee daily operations of core facilities, ensuring efficient service delivery and high-quality support for researchers.
  • Assist the core director in analyzing performance reports for the center budget and evaluates budget variances.
  • Develop, revise and maintain business plans as needed.
