About the Job

The researcher will assist a multidisciplinary team to capture adult female deer and fit them with GPS collars to track their movements, habitat preferences, and survival rates. The
researcher will work in direct collaboration with and leverage long-term data from the Voyageurs Wolf Project to evaluate patterns of deer mortality and habitat use across different seasons and forest regimes, contributing to a better understanding of how wolves, habitat types, and winter conditions aect deer populations.

All field work will be done in Northern Minnesota (Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem)

The researcher will help meet the objectives of this project, including the following
responsibilities:

  • (30%) quantifying deer mortality and survival rates,
  • (30%) assessing the influence of different forest habitats on deer behavior evaluating how these factors vary over the course of the year,
  • (10%) work with Voyageurs Wolf Project to better understand predator-prey ecology,
  • (30%) implementing the project fieldwork and disseminating these findings to the public.
Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • BA/BS Degree plus at least 2 years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least 6 years.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Expertise in wildlife ecology, animal tracking, GPS telemetry, and habitat modeling
  • Experience and expertise with the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem in northern Minnesota
  • Experience working with the US National Park Service and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
  • A strong record of peer-review publications related to project focus and in leading wildlife ecology and conservation journals
  • Field research and publication experience in wolf-prey systems
  • Strong analytical and data management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $45,489.60 - $47,008.00 annually ($21.87 - $22.60/hr) depending on education/qualifications/experience
