What You Will Do:

The Learning Support Specialist (Writing) plays a critical role in supporting NLU students by encouraging students to take an active role in their education and empowering them to become independent, lifelong learners. The primary responsibility is to tutor students in the fundamental skills of writing, grammar, reading, APA formatting, and other academic skills at the Chicago campus and online. Tutoring occurs through one-on-one appointments and in small workshops utilizing various modes, including in-person, by phone, as well as via email and video conferencing software. The Learning Support specialist will help monitor and communicate the progress of student writing and reading skills, reach out to at-risk students, and accurately track student tutoring usage. The Learning Support Specialist responsibilities also include scheduled hours in Study Tables to ensure a seamless access to resources for students and promoting Study Table and Learning Support offerings with faculty and other stakeholders. Finally, the Learning Support Specialist (Writing) will support faculty and students in writing intensive courses. While this position is based at Wheeling, travel to the Chicago campus will be required as department services are located at both campuses



Essential Responsibilities

    Tutor for general education and English courses as well as general academic skills (APA formatting as well as note-taking, reading, and time management strategies). Provide writing support for major courses with substantial writing components.
  • Collaborate with faculty to support at-risk students. Conduct class visits at the beginning of each term, respond to faculty alerts, and provide embedded support in online and blended courses.
  • Create and present writing workshops/webinars to support students in their English and writing intensive classes to improve their academic skills.
  • Monitor and track student progress and usage of tutoring services.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Communication, or other related degree (Education, Lingu8istics), Master's Degree preferred.
  • One-three (1-3) years experience teaching or tutoring in diverse modalities (hybrid/blended, online).
  • One-three (1-3) years prior teaching or tutoring experience in writing and knowledge of writing pedagogy and instructional practice, particularly in writing and reading.
  • One-three (1-3) years experience with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities; specific knowledge of the needs of multilingual and multidialectal students.
  • Must have experience tutoring or teaching writing-related skills and content along with knowledge of APA style writing and formatting.
  • Familiarity with all things writing and English related, including grammar, proper essay formatting and outline structures.

The salary range of the grade for this position is $38,443 to $53,820 annually. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate. Offers are based on multiple factors permitted by law, including but not limited to: budgetary considerations, job-related knowledge/skills, experience, market considerations, tenure and standing with the university (applicable to current employees), and internal equity.
