Assists the pathologists or pathologists' assistants (PAs) in preparing frozen section slides, preparation of native kidney specimens for tissue adequacy, submits control tissue for immunohistochemistry, and other duties as needed to assist the PA in the gross room. Maintains the morgue, morgue records, and coordinates the storage and release of patient remains. Assists the pathologists in the performance of postmortem examination. Position Responsibilities Routinely performs gross examination of small non-complex biopsy specimens and documents pertinent information into the LIS using provided templates, while ensuring patient confidentiality. Loads prepared cassettes in tissue processor. Rigorously adheres to patient safety standards by always verifying at least two patient identifiers and taking preventative measures to ensure no cross-contamination of specimens. Changes solutions (alcohol, formalin, xylene and paraffin wax) from tissue processors by ensuring proper disposal of waste per department guidelines and by filling condensate bottles to the appropriate levels with clean solutions. Maintains the required records. Stores and disposes of surgical and autopsy tissues, limbs, body fluids, and blood in accordance with regulated medical waste guidelines. Is responsible for proper packaging, labeling, and documentation of stored tissue and tissue waste. Handles the disposal of biological waste and chemical waste for the laboratory and other areas as required. Assists the pathologist and/or PA with frozen sections, prepares native kidney specimens for the pathologist, and samples control tissue for immunohistochemistry. Ensures all instruments and equipment are clean, are in adequate supply, are easily accessible to the pathologist, and are in good working order prior to the start of each autopsy. Cleans and disinfects the grossing bench and autopsy suite after each use. Assists pathologist performing the autopsy at each division using established standard precautions. Is responsible for the proper closing, cleaning, bagging of the remains, and removal of personal items from nursing units. Position Qualifications Required: Required Experience: Two (2) years of pathology/morgue-related laboratory experience preferred. Ability to communicate and organize effectively. Good interpersonal and time management skills. Required Education: Associate's degree in biological science required; bachelor's degree preferred. Hourly Rate: $29.49 - $45.69 The actual salary/rate will vary based on applicant's experience as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
