National Director Small Business Banking
The Director of Small Business Lending is responsible for leading and expanding the recently established small business segment, which currently includes approximately 110 colleagues. This role drives growth by developing and sustaining effective sales processes, providing strong sales leadership, and partnering closely with the Retail Banking Leadership and Market Presidents overseeing Business Banking.
Key responsibilities include:
Segment Growth & Performance
- Expand and strengthen the small business segment, primarily in our major markets (California, Michigan, and Texas), while maintaining credit quality, achieving annual profit goals, and ensuring top quartile customer satisfaction and process excellence.
Sales Leadership
- Guide and support teams to execute sales strategies that deliver measurable business growth.
Product Development & Delivery
- Partner with Product Management and Comerica Credit Administration to design, price, and distribute competitive small business products.
Strategic Partnerships
- Leverage organizational resources by collaborating with the Commercial Bank, Community Development Lending, Small Business Administration, and External Affairs to drive holistic business growth.
Compliance & Quality
- Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and internal standards while driving high-quality client and colleague experiences.
This leadership role requires a proven ability to grow business segments, deliver sustainable results, and build effective cross-functional partnerships to advance Comerica's presence in the small business banking segment.
Position Responsibilities:
Leadership
- Define and sustain an effective operating model that delivers customer value and exceeds customer expectations.
- Develop and coordinate all Small Business Banking activities (collectively referred to as the small business segment or LOB).
- Lead the growth of the Small Business segment nationally including achieving loan, deposit, payment and treasury services growth to deliver revenue and expense goals.
- Drive expansion in access to credit for small businesses in the markets we serve and effectively support the bank's CRA goals in partnership with Business Banking and Community Impact teams.
- Execution of effective sales leadership including personally leading team meetings, sales meetings, and customer sales blitzes campaigns and participating in community events and non-profit boards.
- Drive sustainment and development of new Small Business products in collaboration with the Product Management, the Change Readiness organization, the Business Loan Center and Technology.
Profitability
- Drive profitability throughout the Small Business LOB.
- Develop strategic goals and management policies to establish and meet aggressive growth targets.
- Deliver on growth targets while maintaining rigorous credit quality standards in the Small Business segment.
- Development and execution of sales processes that build the skills of the sales teams and deliver on enhanced profitability through acquisition of new customers, customer retention and relationship expansion.
Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with the market teams within the Retail Bank and across lines of business to establish effective strategies and goals for the markets.
- Work collaboratively to set effective product pricing.
- In partnership with the Retail Banking Executive Director and Sales Enablement, develop and drive the strategy to grow small business banking within the banking centers.
- Development of integration strategies and execution plans with Retail Banking peers to enhance the customer experience.
Position Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
- Certificate in Credit Analysis or related experience
- 10 years of experience in Small Business Banking experience to include both sales and sales management, centralized lending for business banking or small business, or similar experience in Business Banking
- 10 years of experience in Credit and financial statement analysis
- 10 years of experience in supervisory and/or management
Work Best Category: Category B - 3-4 days in office on designated days/1-2 days remote
Hours: 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday
