THE POSITION

Are you interested in working with individuals who are blind, have low vision, or who have functional visual limitations? The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR), Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services (BBVS) District Office is looking for an Orientation and Mobility Intern to participate in a structured training program designed to provide practical work experience in order to assist Pennsylvanians with disabilities gain the skills necessary to live and work independently in their communities. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Orientation and Mobility Intern, you will gain an understanding of orientation and mobility therapy, while also learning how to promote optimal personal and social adjustment to blindness. While participating in on-the-job training, you will be taught how to assess referrals by collecting and reviewing reports and information, consulting with staff, interviewing individuals, and observing current levels of function to create an individualized plan and make referrals for other appropriate services. Work also involves learning how to provide sequences of individualized or group instruction by implementing experience-based learning activities and supervised practice of techniques to promote optimum attainment of independence. Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, upon successful completion of the training period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Erie. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Current enrollment in the final year of an accredited college or university bachelor's or master's degree program or certificate program in orientation and mobility.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires authorization by the college or university for the student to participate in the commonwealth's Orientation and Mobility Intern program. Upon entering the internship, the student must be enrolled in the final semester of the appropriate degree or certificate program.

Other Requirements:

  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:

  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
    • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
