Job Description Summary:NCAR's Earth Observing Laboratory - Research Aviation Facility (RAF) is currently hiring for the role of Technician V. This position, which is casual, as needed, and in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, contributes to the planning and documentation of technical projects and field campaigns. Responsibilities include creating instrument schematics, updating both instrument and aircraft schematics, tracking drawing revisions, and maintaining instrument files and databases. Some assignments involve complex problem-solving and demand creativity, independent judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Position Details:

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

Electrical and Electronic Drawing Duties:

  • Create interconnect drawings for aircraft equipment installations using TurboCAD.

  • Develop electrical schematics for RAF instruments based on specifications provided by RAF engineers.

  • Collaborate closely with scientists and engineers to collect necessary information for technical drawings.

  • Coordinate with technicians to implement corrections during project uploads.

  • Update and maintain electrical and aircraft infrastructure schematics, ensuring revision history is accurately tracked.

  • Work with RAF Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs) to obtain certification approvals for drawings.

  • Create, update, and manage standardized drawing templates.

  • Ensure all drawings accurately reflect the actual aircraft payload configuration.

  • Possess advanced knowledge of software tools and techniques related to aircraft data systems.

  • Maintain familiarity with FAA standards for the installation of power wiring, signal wiring, and mechanical assemblies on RAF aircraft.

Instrument Files and Database Duties:

  • Maintain and organize instrument files and tracking spreadsheets to ensure accurate documentation.

  • Manage an Access database to track instrument locations, repair history, and operational status.

  • Complete required forms and documentation to support project upload procedures.

  • Ensure compliance with established documentation and procedural standards.

  • Effectively delegate tasks to junior technicians for the maintenance and calibration of research equipment and data systems.

  • Collaborate with project management to support data quality assurance efforts.

Who We'd Love To Join Our Team

Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria:
Education and Experience:

  • Graduation certificate from a technical institute in an electrical, mechanical, or other relevant area.

  • Twelve years of progressively more responsible technical experience

  • -or- an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expert knowledge of the FAA CFR 14 airworthiness standards and FAA Advisory Circular 43.13-B.

  • Expert knowledge of aircraft systems, including signal and power distribution.

  • Highly proficient in creating electrical/electronic drawings using TurboCAD or similar CAD software.

  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Access.

  • Capable of navigating and operating within a Linux environment.

  • Strong technical and logistical problem-solving skills with sound decision-making abilities.

  • Highly proficient in reading and interpreting electrical schematics.

  • Expert understanding of electronic components and their functions.

  • Effective team player, able to collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Self-motivated, with the ability to initiate and complete tasks under variable deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to consistently deliver high-quality work.

Desired (but not required)
Proficient in PCB layout design using Altium or comparable electronic design software.
