A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in a position that requires a commercial driver's license. Applicants must possess a valid class A CDL with air brakes at time of application submission to be eligible.

The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking truck driver to be a part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. With more than 25,000 acres of parkland, nine RECenters, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more, FCPA is an exciting organization to be a part of and there are many opportunities for staff to make a difference at every level.

Reports to 4501 Brookfield Corporate Drive in Chantilly on a daily basis and is dispatched to various Park Authority sites throughout Fairfax County. Operates a variety of gasoline or diesel powered motorized heavy trucks and construction equipment in maintenance and construction work. Drives a truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials. Drives dump truck and trailer combinations to transport or haul construction equipment weighing over 26,000 pounds. Properly secures load for transit. Operates snow removal, sand spreading and other snow control equipment. Manual labor is a regular and routine expectation for this position. May assist in leading a work crew when required.

Illustrative Duties

  • May operate snow blower, self-propelled riding mower and tractor with attached mower;
  • Performs manual labor and assists in concrete and asphalt work, basic masonry and carpentry tasks, and basic storm sewer tasks;
  • Adjusts or constructs manholes to proper grade level;
  • Operates a variety of small power tools including, but not limited to: weed cutter, push mower, power tamper, gas roller, chain saw, concrete sewer, pump and gas generators;
  • Drives in all types of traffic and weather and is exposed to the possibility of accident;
  • Determines shortest and safest route, recognizing hazardous conditions, and changing routes to avoid such conditions;
  • Follows safety rules and regulations and other posted rules for moving vehicles;
  • Judges overhead and side clearances, turning radius, braking distance, and safest distance to be maintained from proceeding vehicle;
  • Performs light maintenance such as checking and adding fuel, water, oil and air, checking brakes, changing tires, and cleaning and washing vehicles;
  • May assist in leading a work crew when required.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the State Vehicle Code regulating truck operation;
  • Skill in the operation of heavy motorized equipment;
  • Ability to make minor repairs to heavy equipment;
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform duties requiring manual dexterity, such as reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the eighth school grade; plus, one year of experience in the operation of up to two-and-one-half ton capacity trucks. Experience as outlined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the educational requirement.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years of experience operating tandem dump trucks for hauling, dumping, and spreading a variety of loose materials and operating dump truck and trailer combinations hauling construction equipment.
  • Applicants should have a history of labor related work experience as this position requires completion of manual labor on a frequent basis.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Class A CDL-Required upon hire

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Frequently lifts equipment and chains weighing up to 50 pounds. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
