Position Summary:

The Public Safety Sergeant will provide leadership and guidance to Public Safety Officers, Services Officers, Security Officers, Information Desk Staff and Volunteers. Assists in supervising the activities of an assigned shift.



  1. Provides appropriate supervision to ensure all officers, staff and volunteers to ensure proper performance. Assists in the performance of security related duties, as required.
  2. Responds to all critical incidents occurring on campus. Verifies that all appropriate policies, procedures and guidelines were followed. Utilizes experience, training and knowledge to resolve security and/or customer service issues.
  3. Work with the officers, staff and volunteers to ensure professional appearance and operational readiness on a daily basis.
  4. Continually inspect post to ensure coverage and appropriate conduct of officers and staff.
  5. Ensure that all vehicles are properly maintained and inspected on a daily basis.
  6. Initiate and supervise preliminary investigations.
  7. Maintain appropriate documents relevant to shift activities, time records, overtime, training, schedules, personnel action forms, post orders, etc.
  8. Oversee training and roll calls to provide relevant information to the officers in order to maintain a high level of performance. Tracks the completion of required training programs.
  9. Work with the officers, staff and volunteers to prepare performance plans and evaluations.
  10. Instruct the Manager or Director on all matters that impact the shift, such as on-campus/off-campus crime, on an as-needed basis.
  11. Develops and recommends policies, procedures and changes to improve security operation.
  12. Assures that employees are cognizant of hazards to personnel on the job, thereby reducing the risk of injury
  13. Other duties may be assigned.


Education & Experience:



  • Work requires a comprehensive knowledge of security functions as would normally be acquired by significant experience in a security operation preferably with completion of a High School degree or equivalent.
  • Must have and maintain an acceptable background history, successful completion of the health screening and must be able to meet all criteria necessary to obtain and maintain a MD State Police security clearance.


Skills & Abilitied Required:



  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills necessary in order to deal effectively with HCGH personnel and the public.
  • Work requires the ability to properly and professionally handle stressful and hostile situations.
  • Requires ability to use Corporate Security self-defense equipment.


Knowledge of Equipment:



  • Standard office and Security Communication Equipment and Vehicles


Salary Range: Minimum 26.12/hour - Maximum 43.11/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.

In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
