Department Summary

The College of Music, Undergraduate Advising area, is looking for an academic advisor to join their team. This position is responsible for advising students on degree/program requirements and course scheduling.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for advising students on degree/program requirements and course scheduling. Maintains and updates student status records, transcript evaluations, degree plan audits, and graduation applications. Determines how transfer credits apply toward degree requirements. Prepares, updates and conducts presentations for students, prospective students and parents. Assists with College events including audition days and commencement.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong presentation skills.
Strong problem-solving skills.
Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications.
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to work independently and within a team.
Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Background and/or degree in music

Job Duties



  • Advise students individually and in group settings regarding degree requirements and University and College Policies. Make referrals to campus offices as necessary.
  • Prepare and present degree information at new student orientations, prospective student appointments, College of Music audition days, and other group activities. Assisting and marshaling graduates at undergraduate CoM commencement ceremonies.
  • Perform initial credit evaluations for incoming students and process any required exceptions on their degree audits in accordance with University and College policies.
  • Contribute to the overall organizational health and performance of the College of Music Advising Office through teamwork, knowledge sharing, professional development and professional relationship building.
  • Conduct initial review of graduation applications and communicate deficiencies to student as necessary to meet College of Music and University deadlines.

Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, with occasional nights and weekends as needed
