Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The mission of the
UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media is to prepare students to ignite the public conversation in our state, the nation and the world, and to understand the role of communication in fostering democracy. Our faculty, staff, students and administrators work collaboratively to build and foster an environment that is welcoming, inclusive and accessible to people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and beliefs.
The school offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, and administers a variety of professional development and distance-learning programs. Enrollment includes about 1,000 undergraduates and 130 graduate students in addition to professional development and distance education students. Our faculty members are international thought leaders whose scholarly and creative activities are visible and respected in the public realm. |
Position Summary |
The Computer Support Specialist is responsible for assisting IT staff in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media with supporting everyday computer and technology needs of faculty, staff and students. Typical activities include classroom technology support; new computer set up; general PC, Mac and printer troubleshooting; and assistance with basic computing tasks. Software and systems supported include Active Directory, Adobe Creative Cloud, browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari), Jamf, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, and Zoom. The Computer Support Specialist will also help with short- and long-term IT projects, including training of, and outreach to the
UNC Hussman community. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Graduation from high school and one year in the field of technology related to the position's role.
- Computer coursework may be substituted year-for- year for the required experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Journey level requires an additional six months experience
- Advanced level requires an additional one year of experience. |

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
- Ability to work as part of a team;
- Being professional, courteous, and reliable;
- Initiative, willingness to take on tasks with minimal oversight and resolve routine issues with little or no supervision;
- Previous computer support experience. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Computer related certifications are desirable, but not required. |
