Position Title: Program Director
Department: Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs
Position Type: Full-time, exempt position. This position is eligible for benefits.

Salary Range: $75,000-$80,000

Work Schedule: This is a full-time one-year appointment with opportunity for extension. Monday - Friday; hours to be determined.

Reports To: Executive Director and Associate Director

Organization Overview

The Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs at Cal State LA is a nonpartisan center committed to energizing, promoting and defending democracy. Founded by former California Governor Pat Brown, the Institute fosters civic education, promotes public engagement and leadership, and serves as a thought leader on key regional and statewide issues by analyzing and spotlighting smart policies that encourage equity and advance social justice.

Position Overview
Under the general direction of the Executive Director and Associate Director of the Pat Brown Institute (PBI), the Program Director is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, and daily management of all programming of the Institute. This includes civic education and leadership development programs, candidate forums, and policy conferences. The Program Director will develop programming, supervise programming staff, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the successful planning, execution, and evaluation of PBI programs.

Essential Functions

Program Strategy & Management:

* Lead the development, implementation, and management of all Institute programs and initiatives.

* Design, enhance, and expand programs that align with the Institute's mission and strategic priorities.

* Develop and oversee project timelines and services to ensure compliance with grant agreements and successful delivery of program goals.

* Develop and maintain accurate and comprehensive program databases and reporting systems to track key data, deliverables, outcomes, and impact.

Supervision & Leadership:

* Supervise and provide guidance to programming staff, student professionals, consultants, and volunteers.

* Support and cultivate the professional growth of student workers, interns, and fellows through mentorship and development opportunities.

* Ensure effective communication and collaboration across programming and operational teams.

Program Operations:

* Administer and develop the Institute's civic education and engagement programming, including Civic U, the Galbraith Public Policy Fellowship, candidate forums and policy conferences.

* Lead the planning, promotion, and execution of Civic U sessions and other Institute events, including development of content, presentation of curriculum, outreach materials, and logistical coordination.

* In collaboration with the communications consultant, manage marketing content and communication strategies to promote program activities, including brochures, one-pagers, newsletters, and web content.

* Collaborate with campus and community partners to promote programs, particularly efforts related to young voter education and civic engagement.

Evaluation, Fiscal Oversight & Reporting:

* Manage program expenditures and resources; track program-specific revenues and expenses.

* Prepare reports, contribute to grant applications and tracking, and provide recommendations for administrative implementation and improvements.

* Communicate regularly with the Executive Director and Associate Director to ensure alignment of program performance with organizational objectives.

Institutional Engagement & Representation:

* Contribute to the advancement of the Institute's initiatives and related strategic efforts.

* Represent the Institute at events, meetings, and conferences as needed.

* Support the Institute's internal and external communications strategies and community engagement efforts.

Additional Duties:

* Contribute to fundraising and grant development efforts through proposal input, reporting, and compliance tracking.

* Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Associate Director.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, and at least five years of progressively responsible experience in program development, civic engagement, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to any or several of the following: community and civic engagement, teaching, strategic guidance for grassroots organization, or innovative platforms for civic education.
  • Understanding of government structure and function, and knowledgeable insight into current and emerging trends in politics, policy and government.
  • Experience with program development and management; computer skills; excellent organizational skills; and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Creative, open-minded and encouraging of new ideas.
  • Collaborative, team-minded, and able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders within and outside the organization.
  • Experience, ability or demonstrated interest in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.

The incumbent must demonstrate an interest or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the UAS.
