Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
To deliver high speed, resilient, and secure network services to support the greater mission of the University by enhancing the educational experience through technology.
Position Summary
To administer, deploy, maintain, and support network/security infrastructure and services in support of the greater mission of the University. This will be accomplished by:

  • Administering, deploying, maintaining, and supporting network/security/voice infrastructure and services.
  • Developing and maintain standards, procedures and documentation for all systems and infrastructure.
  • Plan and develop new technology to improve performance and productivity, reduce IT costs and improve profitability.
  • Assess networking and technology, analyze system performance analysis, plan system integration, develop specifications, and test and evaluate solutions.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for networks and connectivity.
  • Support and execute incident, problem and change management processes according to established policies and procedures.
  • Solve complex problem situations and participate in the identification of opportunities for improvement to processes, procedures, or tools.
  • Develop and document best practices and procedures for installing and maintaining systems
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as necessary for the continued growth and advancement of the University.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science/Computer Engineering or related field and 3-5 years of relevant work experience or equivalent education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive networking industry experience in handling various switched and routed data networks & protocols in a multi-platform environment.
  • Advanced experience with the configuration of core wired and wireless routers, switches, controllers, and appliances.
  • Wireless Network Design, Implementation and Optimization.
  • 8+ years of experience required in related field (Core/Distribution Infrastructure).
  • Minimum 8 years of experience troubleshooting OSPF, BGP and MPLS.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience troubleshooting Layer 2 switching and VLANs.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience with any or all key WLAN vendors (I.e. Aruba, Cisco, Fluke, etc.).
  • Ability to learn new skills and technologies as required.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills of complex network, system, and/or security problems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly disciplined and motivated, able to work independently, under direction, or as a member of a team.
  • Thorough understanding of WLAN authentication, security, and network management.
  • RF Survey/Engineering and RF troubleshooting skills.
  • Hands-on experience with survey tools as AirMagnet, iBwave, TEMS, JDSU.
  • Provide operational support for complex, wireless network deployments.
  • Wired IEEE networking standards: 802.3/Ethernet, 802.1x/Authentication, 802.1d/w spanning-tree, rapid spanning-tree (RSTP), per-vlan rapid spanning-tree (PVST+), 802.1q trunking.
  • Wireless IEEE networking standards: 802.11a/b/g/n, EAP/EAPOL/802.1x, 802.11h. Radio Frequency.
  • Knowledge in the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz spectrum.
  • FreeRadius, and/or Microsoft NPS Radius.
  • Extensive understanding of network systems architecture, OSI model, QoS, and TCP/IP and IP based protocols.

  • BGP, MPLS, VPN, VRF.

  • SNMP and its application in network monitoring systems.
  • Computer systems architecture, operating systems, and network hardware/software.
  • Extensive network workstation/server troubleshooting skills.
  • Extensive understanding of Linux/UNIX (Various OSs), Windows 7/8/10, and Windows Server 2008/2012/2016 based systems.
  • Extensive understanding of IPv6 and how it differs from IPv4.
  • Packet capture and analysis with Wireshark, TCPdump, or similar tools.
  • Log analysis.
  • Rotating 24O7 On-Call Support.
